TBH a compression test would check the head gasket was fitted correctly anyways and he should be glad to do that at least for free, persoanlly doesnt sound as though this "Mechanic" is worth his salt, or he's trying the pry more money outta you

would not start ! easly bump started as i live on a bank but thats not the point! it drains the battery to the point that its dead ! asked the mechanic could it be a s**te battery or starter motor but he says no he charged the battery and the starter is fine . the guy i bought it off had it foer three weeks only had it valeted then sold it on because he thought the fuel pump was dodgie! i bought it know about the dodgie fuel pump and took him for his word that this was the only problem ( the guy i bought it off lives three doors down the street ).. there is a switch inside next to the ignition that turns the pump on and off

Don't understand why you had the h/gasket changed without basic checks?

as 'fatboyslim' said, why on earth would you of replaced the head gasket without doing other checks. if the car bump starts and is fine after a charge i would be changing the battery first! and as for the switch for the fuel pump, im guessing this is a retrofit? is it to by pass a faulty ignition switch or something? if compressions are down you will notice it during an attempted start, instead of hearing the chuging, you will just get a whirring

well reason is that i used my own mechanic at first who says the head gasket was gone ......then when i went to see the guy i bought it off he wanted to use his own mechanic and go halfers on the bill! i think i have been well ripped off to be honest as the gasket may well have been broke when i bought it and that it was not as the seller told me " just a new fuel pump would fix it " and there has been other problems .........when i start it the engine sound like its just about too fire up but does not and totaly drains the battery... so it looks like i will be paying his ripping off mechanic for replacing the head gasket then not bothering his a**e to find out the problem and taking the car to some one else to sort it out!

Did you buy it from a dealer or a private seller?
Whats the age, condition, mileage and price you paid for it?

the mechanic says it could be a compression problem???? surely he's got a compression tester! it's hardly a long a hard job checking compression!.
I would def go have a word with who you bought it off & also voice some very strong opinions with the mechanic about why he's done the head gasket without doing other basic checks 1st!
