Hi

I have this 206 1.4lx on a 2001 plate and its developed a sound from the gearbox area like some kid has put playing cards on the spokes of his wheels, when I drive using the accelerator the sound almost dissapears but when I take my foot off the gas it comes back and when the clutch is pressed down the noise goes slightly quieter.

Now a garage has informed me that this could be the differential bearings, so is this a major job and if the gearbox needs replacing whats thw cheapest option as I am pretty skint and the car is second hand and cost me £900 and Ive only had it for about 3 weeks.

I feel totally sick because I have replaced the, Oil, Oil Filter, one brake calliper, pollen filter, fuel filter, plugs, front brake hose, clutch, drive belt, and air filter so I have spent a few pounds already.

The car has no rust is very clean and tidy but is it worth doing?

In my mind I think so because if I dont Im going to have to save up again ans start from scratch.

Please help guys or im going to end it all Sad

Is the noise there when the car is stationary?

Might be cheaper getting a reconditioned box to put in rather than strip the old one down.

Sounds like what mines done. Differential bearings in the box. Just drive around and get used to the sounds. Mine's been whinning for the past 30,000 miles. So you dont need to act to urgently just yet.

Shut it u stupid little f**k, what's the point in posting in all my treads being such a c***? Least I can afford a gti180, and to get the cam belt done!

So apparently everyone knows my financial situation? If I wanted a 180 I would have bought a 180 simples Smile

Easier to fit a new (used) gearbox. Costs are around £75 and labour + oil will be about £100+

Hi Guys

Thanks for all the replies

So yeah its when the car is in motion this happens, A mechanic said its diff bearings and he said the could go at anytime, 6hrs to 6 years sort of thing.

I would like to get them done asap and using a recon box because you dont know what your getting with a second hand one and I cant afford the labour of 2 refits so I would rather get it right first time.

I see CD-B3 said that the cost for a box would be around £75, have you nay links because I cant find one anywhere near that price.

Thanks again guys Very Happy

there's a place in Cleckheaton nr Leeds that does the gearbox repairs. I think they pick your car up aswell, but not sure what they would charge from Bristol.

Might be worth looking Google and seeing if there are any places nearer you.

Thats a bit far but I shall have a scour around to see what I can find.

BTW what sort of realistic prices should I be looking at?
