On uneven ground, I am hearing a knock on rear end. Its a 52 reg 2.0HDi SW, done just over 90K. First noticed the noise a couple months ago, but had MOT due last month so thought if it was something suspension related they would have picked it up, but it sailed through MOT without even any advisories.
Noise is now more noticeable. We live down a sand track, and I can hear it all the time on the uneven surface, but its fine on the road itself, although road humps can cause it too. Cannot isolate which side it is, sometimes sounds one side, sometimes the other. Looked underneath and bounced it, nothing obvious, but guess we need to jack up and take the weight off the wheels to flex everything properly. Hopefully going to investigate tomorrow, but any pointers please on where we should look would be great.

Can of de-icer rolling round? 
If you could get someone else to drive your car down the track and you sit in the back with the tailgate open you might be able to identify the source of the noise.
Even check things like the bumper and exhaust to make sure they are not moving around.

Thanks fro replies.
Turned out to be a combination of a stretched exhaust mount allowing it to bounce, and the spare wheel cage being loose.
Who on earth designed the stupid spare wheel release bolt? Good job I wasn't stuck at the side of the road with a flat tyre - bloody thing wouldn't move, siezed solid. Hubby had to angle grind the top off and re-tap to take an M10 bolt. Atleast now it has a decent head on it to undo it again, instead of the silly slotted screw!
