the other day i turned my ignition on and the speedo jumped to about 30mph and ever since it has sat at5mph, also the handbrake warning beep comes on when you put it up when stationary which is obviously related.

i also drove about 50 miles the other day and when i got to my destination the milage has only gone up 2miles on the trip and on the milage.

just incase it matters my n/s front abs ring is cracked and the light has been on for a while but i shouldnt have thought this would have affected the speedo when standing.

any ideas as the diagnostic brings up nothing

I thought some 206's (I don't remember which) used the ABS sensor as the input for your speedo? Either way it should be fixed as soon as possible really, so you'll find out if that was the issue.

If I'm wrong, which I probably am, I think there's a sensor on/attached/whatever to the gearbox. Could check the soldering behind the cluster as well (Basically what Lee said).

Have you tried searching? I'm pretty sure there's been similar problems.

ye, i have searched but couldnt find anything. im goin to have a quick look at the cluster tommoorow.

strange thing is when you turn the ignition completely off the speed doesnt go down to zero, but i have disconected the battery and that drops it down to 0, but as soon as you reconect and put the ignition on it comes back to 5mph.

verry strange

Put the driver's window down, lift the bonnet and ensure all equipment is switched off.

Ensure all doors are closed and remove key from the ignition.

Wait for 3 minutes, disconnect the vehicle battery and wait 15 seconds.

Reconnect the vehicle battery, wait a further 10 seconds (do not open doors.).

Switch on the side lights through the driver's window.

Switch on the ignition and check system's functionality.

Hold lock button on key down for 10 seconds.

Remove key open & close door test central locking system.

Start the engine and complete the system's check.

open drivers window and bonnet. start engine, turn engine off, remove key, get out of car and close door. leave the car alone for 5 mins dont open a door or any thing, disconnect the battery, leave for 5 mins, dont touch ant thing. reconnect battery, put your arm through window and turn on side lights, you will hear a dong then start engine.

you beat me to it
