Hi All,

The Car went in for its MOT this morning and has come back with a fail Sad

It need 3 things done. The first two are regarding the CV joints and the fault states 'Offside front constant velocity joint gaiter insecurely mounted to its housing [2.5.c.1a]'. It then has the same for the nearside.

The other fault states 'Offside front lower Anti-Roll bar linkage has excessive play in a ball joint [2.4.G.3].

Last year for the MOT I have the CV joints replaced and before that I have had them repacked twice. So firstly do you think as the CV joints were replaced last year I should be able to get them remounted for free (I do have a 12 month warranty from the parts last year) or do you think I will have to pay for this.

If I do have to pay any ideas on roughly how much I would be looking at (I live in Cardiff). I think it cost me about 60 per CV joint to have them replaced last time.

As for the other fault I have no idea what this is. The guy who did the MOT seemed to think it was only something minor but I don't have a clue. Any advice on what I need to get quotes for and a rough price would be most appreciated.

I cant get the work done where I had the MOT as it was a council owned place that only does the MOT and no repairs. I now have 10 days to get it fixed and can then take a back for a free retest.

Your help would be very appreciated.

Not too sure on the CV joints, but the anti-roll bar linkage (if im right) should simply be a new drop link needed. Shouldnt pay more than £15 for a new one. And it's 2 bolts to change, allthough if it still on the original one's the bolts may be a bit stuborn to remove.

Had the same issue, and the garage doing the MOT just cable tied them, 2 further MOT's and never a problem with the CV gaiters again. Smile

Thanks gents I think the CV joint do only need to be clipped on again. I assume a garage can do this in a few minutes so I may as well get it done at the same time as the other issue.

I was told (by a friend) that the ball joint may need to replaced and again this should not cost much. So I would guess I am looking for the two jobs at about 1 hours labour plus parts (say about £20). I think labour in Cardiff is between £40 and £60ph so hopefully both fixed for under £100?

Anti roll bar links are £20 a pair from tune up and sparesworld.

So, the CV joints have been without their rubber boots for possibly a year, during which they've been spinning round at high speed and have lost most of their grease, at the same time a year's worth of grit and dirt have been able to mix with what grease is left..........and you're just going to resecure the boots? If you do that, you're storing up problems for the future!

To do the job properly you need to remove the CVJ, clean it thoroughly of all remaining grease and dirt, then inspect it carefully, if its good then repack it, then refit the CVJ boot (gaiter) securely. I'd say the chances of the CVJ still being without defects is pretty slim, though!!!

Its worth doing properly, if your CVJ fails, then you'll come to a grinding halt by the roadside.

Thanks again guys,

Just spoke to some garages and got some really good quotes. One quoted £80 approx for the work and another quoted £60.

The one who quoted £60 (recommended by a friend) said for the £60 they will clean and repack the CV joints. He did say as you have that the CV joints may need to be replaced (as above why have they come loose) and that would only be an extra £60. I hope that they are OK as I had them replaced a year ago and it seems a bit crap if they only last that long. However the garage I used last time was useless and I would never use them again.

But from what I have been told he is very good and will not con you so if it does all need doing it will be £120 and if not £60 which is well within what I have budgeted.

A bit?? Laughing It took me ages to get mine off, ended up using a nut-splitter on them as the ball joint broke free from the plastic link and ended up just spinning around by itself!

@OP - Just remember if you get stopped by the police driving the vehicle between now and when you have it re-MOT'd you can be fined for driving a known dangerous vehicle. So unless you are going to the garage for pre-booked repairs, or to the MOT centre (again for a pre-booked appointment) probably best not to drive it.

The day that Microsoft makes something that doesn\'t suck is the day that they start making vacuums.

Pah! Amature, i just get the car in the air remove wheel. Soak both nuts in wd40 then try and undo with a socket. The second it starts spinning i get the angle grinder out.

Yup, pretty much! Soaked it all in WD40 for days beforehand (was doing wishbones/drop links/TRE's), didn't/don't have an angle grinder. Probably should get one!

Get one with a decent metal grinding disk and your sorted. Cut straight down the middle of the nut then one turn with the socket and its off.
