my 2000 gti (138) makes abit of a knocking/ticking noise at around 2k rpm.
never heard it before as i had a staight through exhaust fitted, i now have the standard system on and it can be heard.
i dont think its coming from the head, could it be the exhaust manifold?

Its not the normal GTI manifold rattle / noise problem is it?
Official Peugeot warranty fix was remove exhaust manifold & spot weld the 4 inner tubes together & then spot weld them to the outer as well.

Having a similar problem. As i have had the centre section and cat off i am assuming its either the manifold issue or the cat. Just need someone to lend me a foot to rev the car so i can trace the problem

I'm having the same issue on my 01 gti, although mine is through the rev range, louder when cold.
I had a oil and filter change today and it doesn't seem to make much difference. Anyway I just turned the radio up, because I'm not spending no money on the old knacker.

How hard is it to remove the exhaust manifold? I have sourced the noise to the manifold. I have heard that this is a common problem on the gti 138.

So common in fact that the Peugeot official warranty fix is to fire up the welder

Yes, also weld the 4 pipes together in the middle.

This is probably a dumb question but if this was warranty would that mean it was a recall?
Would Peugeot still entertain a fix on a 11 year old car?

No it was never a safety recall so it's not Peugeot's problem.
If the customer brought the car back for this issue under the Peugeot 3 year manufacturers warranty then the manifold would be removed & welded with no cost to the owner.
If the car was outside the 3 year warranty its new manifold time & the owner has to pay for it.
