Hello everyone.

I've just taken delivery of a 51 plate 2.l 206GTI. Everything is fine with the exception of the temperature gauge reading. It quite quickly climbs above the 90 degree mark and seems to average out at the next black mark. If it's left idling it rises another mark eventually. (110 degrees?). It hasn't however at any time climbed in to the red zone and set off the stop warning and alarm. Also, on a couple of occasions the gauge has been totally dead only to start working the next time the engine is started.I'm also fairly certain that i can't hear the cooling fan step up. Usually, at least on my other cars, this extra cooling is very audible and often lasts after the engine has stopped, but the Pug is silent.

There's no sudden fluctuations of temperature, no obvious leaks and the coolant is full.

The cars got a 3 month warranty and i took it to their mechanic today who changed a green sensor on the left hand side of the engine. However, the problem remained when i picked it up. i've got to take it back on Friday and would like some pointers as to where the problem could be.

you checked the engine coolant and the oil level? mine was always hitting red but that was because my fan never turned on haha my GTi climbs temp super quick but i put that as a good thing means i dont have to wait for it to warm up inside the car WINTER WINNER:D

Does the fan work when the air conditioning is on? This should make it run at the low speed. You'll have to look for this because it's fairly quiet.

When the engine gets really hot the fan runs at high speed and you can hear this. Chances are the relays, terminals and wiring behind the cover on the radiator housing will be very corroded or broken. It's an easy fix for somebody with some new terminals and maybe a couple of relays.

This corrosion of the terminals certainly sounds likely. Would they also cause the gauge to stop working totally on occasion as i described? Also are the relevant relays visible in the picture? If not could you tell me where they are situated please.

The air-con is working fine but i'm sure the fan isn't comming on at any level above that.

As an aside do you have any idea what the green sensor the mechanic changed today is for?

Green sensor is the coolant temperature sensor. The relays are behind the plastic cover on the fan housing. The relay is in the picture dangling from the wires.

Update to this:

I've just got the car back from the garage and one of the wires was indeed corroded and broken.They've fixed this and also replaced the thermostat. However the temperature gauge is still reading too high.

According to the mechanic it's not giving a true reading of the actual coolant temperature, which is at the temperature it ought to be. The fan is also coming on at 90 as it should. His opinion is that the actual gauge in the speedo cluster is faulty. Especially given it's occasional erratic behaviour when it doesn't move at all. Once again, the car can be left running for an hour without moving, the gauge will never go over the second mark past 90 or into the red zone at all. He also checked the system wasn't pressurising.

Given that he's also replaced the coolant temperature sensor is this a likely diagnosis? If so, and if i leave it unfixed, will i run into problems when the ambient temperature rises later in the year? IE if the gauge should read overheat but the actual coolant temperature is fine will the car drop into limp mode? Or is that reading taken elsewhere?

from what i rememberm the green plug, give the temp to the clocks so if that has been changed problem is most likley the clocks.
and im also fairly sure there is a blue plug that actually does the engine managment side of things, e.g tell it to run richer / leaner with then coolent temp / other ecu readings. if the fan is spinning at 90 annd or if you have the air con on ( and gassed) i would say it is the clocks at fault also.

Update to the update. Wink

Took the car to another garage today for a second opinion.

They put it on their diagnostics and basically got all sorts of odd readings, such as the temperature showing on the diagnostics as falling when the gauge was rising! In between the gauge wasn't working at all. In fact it only ever works if you wait a few seconds after turning the key before firing the engine. Crank the engine straight away and it stays dead. There were no fault codes showing or stored in the ECU.

They replaced the coolant temperature sensor again, this time with genuine Peugeot part as they reckoned factor parts could give an odd reading. No joy though.The needle flicked straight from cold to overheat and back a few times before resuming it's too high reading or not working at all.

The fan didn't seem to come on, hardly likely though, if the ECU is being told the temp is just 17 degrees. : Sad Heaven knows what it's doing to the engine management if it thinks it's that cold all the time. it'll be running richer than a merchant banker.

Eventually they diagnosed a wiring and or ECU fault and recommended to referal to a main dealers! Shocked

I've returned the car to the original garage and told them to get it sorted under the warranty and not to give it back to me until it's fixed properly. They've booked it into to an automotive electricans tomorrow so we'll see what happens then i guess.

They joys of second hand cars, 10 days ownership, in garages for 3 of them and counting. Crying or Very sad

Back from the auto electricians... definitely a duff gauge. All temps are fine on their diagnostics, fans kicking in as and when they should. ECU's getting the correct readings, just losing the signal at the gauge itself.

Off to scour the breakers adds for a pre-plex set of silver Jaegers as near to my mileage as possible. Sod's law all the ones on fleabay are multiplex. Either that or send the original off for repair but that's got a seven day turn around and would be a major PITA.

at least you now know it is the clocks.
i cant rmember if i sold my gti pre plex clocks il have a look had 104k on clock i think
