Hello all,

First post time!

My wife owns an X-reg (2000) plate 206. We are getting a whining / whistle sound from the fan belt. We have tried multiple belts plus a new top pully with little success.

I am currently driving it on the motorway to try and "bed" the latest belt to see if that works. It warms up and the noise does go eventually.

Any ideas - anyone else suffered a similar or same issue please?

Thanks in advance.

Update: The Aux pulley has been replaced - noise still there.

Spray a little WD40 it goes quiet for a small moment.

The mechanic has tried a few fan belts - this one is 5 ribbed - anyone got any experience with different belts or different pulleys?

Yes we did replace it. The mechanic is thinking of changing again. He did pose the question about the fan belts others uses too - we are using 5 ribbed at the moment - he is thinking of using a 4 ribbed one - thoughts?

I'm getting something similar on my 1.1 it only seems to be there when starting her up but sometimes (not very often) it doesn't do it at all. Mine tends to sound abit squeaky but it's not a regular noise & it seems to disappear when the engine warms up.

I cant see the number of ribs making a lot of difference. If a 4 ribbed belt is the same width as a 5 then it'll get trashed on the pullies because the pitch of the grooves is different.

Were did you spray the WD40? It sounds (excuse the pun) like a dry bearing to me, maybe power steering pump or alternator!!

I spray direct over the fan belt and the turning pulleys. It lubs the bearings for seconds sadly but when the car is hot it does go quiet. It takes a while to get hot sadly.

Mechanic doesn't think its the alternator but dunno about power steering.

Looked at the receipts last night - the tensioner was replaced in 2009 however the car has done less than 10K miles since then. Thoughts?
