Hi, I just thought I would see if anyone could shed any light on a small problem I have?

When I first start the car (2002 206 GTi 138 - 52k) when it's cold it sounds fine - no problem.

Within a few miles, it develops a tapping noise which is driving me mad Evil or Very Mad

It runs fantastic and I have recently changed the oil (again) but it is just the same - it sounds like 1 tappet has failed??

I have read on here and some other forums about similar noises but they seem to be the opposite and sound when the engine is cool?

Any ideas please?? Many thanks.

Thanks for the reply Seabrook, I don't know that 1 tappet has gone, it just doesn't sound like multiple 'tapps'!! but what do I know Smile

As for the oil I have used 10w40 recommended from Peugeot which has done nothing for the noise on both occasions I have used it (just changed it again after 6 months).

Thanks again

Did you ever get to the bottom of this? My 180 is exactly the same, quiet as a mouse when cold but taps when it warms up? Its getting very annoying and embarrassing. Crying or Very sad

Weird on a 180 because I believe it has hydraulic tappets which are self-adjusting.
What oil are you using?

1.4i, 2001, 3-door, China Blue

I have a 138 that taps, unfortunately for me its an engine change. Only way to find out would be to take the head off and get it checked. Could try some topend treatment at a cheaper option.
