Hi!
I was pulling onto the dual carriageway, and there was a loud bang - followed by steam coming out of the engine. Following this, I was able to engage all gears, however had no drive. There was a strong smell of burning (I'm assuming the clutch?) as well as all the water leaking out onto the road.
I managed to coast down to a stop, and push the car up the kerb etc, however it now will not start.
Having had the RAC out, I know it definitely needs a new driveshaft sensor and mount, so as to allow the engine to start up.
I am however wondering wether the clutch or the gearbox are likely to have gone here? The recovery agent says it is the clutch, however having read around various forums it seems it could be both / either.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Its a W reg Peugeot 206, 1.4.

The same happened to my 206CC. (Apart from the water leak/steam and not starting)
Loud bang, then no drive at all.
I can't help with what it will need to fix it as my car was just returned to the garage and I got my money back, but according to later corespondance with the garage, they say it is just the clutch.
People of here say it could be Clutch, Gearbox or Diff.
Good Luck, I hope it doesn't cost you too much!

Many thanks!
I'm hoping it's just the clutch and sensor, as that should be 300 or so!
Especially as I need to sort out a blowing exhaust and I've just had 4 new tyres and a new battery put in.
I've only had it a couple of weeks, however was a private sale so I can't really do much on that front.
Looks like Mr. RAC will be out again tomorrow to tow it somewhere for a thorough look over, just very stressful it happening on a Friday evening leaving me carless all weekend!

Not that I noticed.
What I did notice was a lack of oomph when changing gear? As in, a lack of additional power that youd expect when shifting up.
If that makes sense!

sounds like clutch/gearbox but not sure on the steam bit as clutch/box would not cause this.
you sure it was steam and not just the clutch burning ??

Hopefully the clutch and not the box. Is there any way of testing which it may be do you know?
It could have been the clutch burning, although as all the water from the reservoir subsequently drained where it sat on the roadside, I assumed it would be steam under pressure from the pressure release cap?

hmm yeah if you lost all the water then yes it do sound like steam you saw but the box/clutch going bang should not cause this or the other way round IE: overheating should not cause the clutch/box to go pop.
as for testing the box or clutch no not really untill you strip it all out then if clutch looks all ok you can bet its the box or if the clutch is fooked or broken up then thats normaly the probably.
just trying to work out how the steam/overheating and clutch/box probably are related.

This is what I'm worried about.
This isnt really something Im able to do myself, so Im going to get the RAC to take it to a garage tomorrow, having got a few quotes, but once its there Im sort of stuck if its overly costly.
Anyone got any ideas as to how much a new gearbox might be? (fitted etc!)
Thanks

you sure it was steam? When my 1.4 blew its last box too bits i know the oil running out hitting the hot exhaust generated a lot of smoke.

it could have been smoke?
I assumed as the water was empty and had all run out over the road it was steam.
Is a box an expensive replace?
And is it something that could be diagnosed prior to me getting it taken to a garage?

That could also explain the damaged flywheel sensor? (the sensor mount also broke) as its fixed to the front of the box?

Depends how confident you are with a set of spanners, box from a scrapyard is about 100 and it could be changed in under a day.

Hmm, I'll get some quotes in the morning.
Do you think the RAC would be able to diagnose where the fault actually lies? Or is this more of a take to the garage and hope job!
Lots of questions I know! Sorry!

They have to take the gearbox off the car to change or inspect the clutch anyway. When you have your verdict and if it is the gearbox, if you supplied a replacement gearbox then if its a friendly garage they'll probably throw it on for you while they do the clutch. But do check first that they will. Plenty of 206's in the scrap yards these days so you should be able to get a cheap gearbox. They can be quite tricky to do / lift even if you've got a ramp.
Are you sure that the water wasn't empty anyway and the stuff all over the road wasnt gearbox oil? Very strange connection as already said.
Worst case scenario if they take the box off and something is really really drastically wrong you could always throw the car on ebay in that state and buy another one - they're so cheap now.
