A few random photos for you-

The new radiator setup. Golf GTi rad, shorter height than the original so we can try to get some cold air into the throttle bodies. Had no problems with cooling at Snetterton testing last week or at Rockingham, showing around 90 deg during track sessions.

 


New race battery, smaller and lighter than the original and means I can now fit a passenger seat for trackdays. Also cut some weigh out of the bonnet and tailgate and scraped off some more matting from inside the doors, weight should be around 915 KG.

Time for an update, as it's been a while...

Cadwell Park - Tricolore Trophy (Class A) - 18th July

Qualifying
Beautiful weather in Lincolnshire for my first visit to Cadwell Park since 2009. Qually was eventful, I suffered brake problems resulting in running straight on at Mansfield, and a spin at the Old Hairpin. Pretty happy with 8th on the grid (5th and last in class), with a 1:48.65, considering the problems.

Race 1
Got a good start, side by side with a Clio around the first three corners, with me eventually pulling in front. Broke away a little bit and ended up in a fairly lonely 6th place (4th in class) after another car withdrew. Didn’t push too hard as I still had concerns about the ability of the brakes to go the whole race distance without boiling the fluid. Fastest lap 1:47.14

Race 2
Another good start put me right on the bumper of the Renault 5 in front, but there was no gap so I had to back off a little. I made it through to 5th place (4th in class) but I wasn’t able to stay with the lead quartet, who were bumper to bumper for the whole race. I must have been pushing too hard to keep up as on lap 5 the brake fluid boiled and I lost the pedal in the braking area before the Mountain. I banged it into 3rd gear, pitched it into the chicane and after flying through the air and sliding up the grass, eventually came to rest at the top of the Mountain, unscathed. I called it a day for my 2nd DNF of the year. Fastest lap 1:47.42

So, disappointed at another DNF but delighted at getting away with it without any damage to my car or anyone else’s. The brakes definitely need an upgrade, there are a few cost effective options so I just need to decide which way to go.
Next event: Castle Combe - September 5th.

Race one: 6th overall, 4th in class
Race two: DNF
Fastest lap: 1:47.14

Castle Combe - Tricolore Trophy (Class A)- 5th Sept

Qualifying
Having never been to Castle Combe before, I spent the week leading up to the event watching Tricolore videos from 2014. Having replaced the front brakes for a larger 306 GTi-6 setup, I was having to get used to the feel of the new setup, bed in the pads and learn the track all in the space of 15 mins. Even so, disappointed with 11th on the grid (8th out of 9 in class), with a 1:22.38

Race 1
As always, got a good start, making up a place or two by the first corner. On lap 2 I got a good slingshot onto the start/finish straight and managed to pass a Clio on the brakes into Quarry, taking me into 8th place (6th in class). A few laps later there was a safety car and on the restart I got away well, pulling a small gap from the Clio behind but had no chance of catching the Clio in front. A cracking race, with the Clio behind pushing me all the way to the flag. Fastest lap 1:20.65

Race 2
If I said I made another good start, would you believe me? Made my way up to 5th (3rd in class) by the first corner. I was immediately re-passed by one of the fast Clio’s on the drag up to Tower, and another one on the following lap. On lap 3 the Clio that had pushed me in race 1 made a pass, but then outbraked himself a few corners later and went grasstracking, leaving me back in 7th with a 205 hot on my tail. He had a look at a few different corners and I could see that the Clio that had gone off was back in hot pursuit as well. Eventually I overcooked it going into the final corner, had a huge slide and lost some momentum, allowing both cars to pass me with 2 laps to go. Best race of the year as far as excitement goes. Finished 9th overall (6th In class). Fastest lap 1:21.39

Post race examination showed that the oil catch tank was full and had begun venting oil onto the back left tyre, which is what caused the huge slide. Having vented 2L of oil in 45 mins of track time is not a good sign. A new engine may be required. A new engine may as well mean some upgrades, as I’m giving away 40-50bhp to most of the front runners in Class A. This was particularly evident at Combe where they were lapping in the 1:17’s.
Next event: Oulton Park – October 3rd.

Castle Combe results-
Race one: 8th overall, 6th in class
Race two: 9th overall, 6th in class
Fastest lap: 1:20.65

Had the car on the dyno for a power run yesterday at A Reeve Performance in Kings Lynn. I was told it was around 175bhp when I bought it, so it was a nice surprise to find it over that, with dodgy fuelling and an engine that's down on compression (100psi v 125psi back in April). It was still making power when it hit the limiter at 6800rpm. Better fuelling and a stronger engine with a few more revs should see 195-200bhp. Really need to find out what profile the Newman "Custom" cams are though. Thinking of putting the 138 head onto a 180 bottom end, does anyone know the CR would be?

Ive been to that breakers a few times, he's useless.
I have a set of 180 rods and pistons that I bought off eBay a few months ago, not sure if they'll fit the 138 crank though as I know they're different.
