which way to hit torsion bars??

hi i'm in the middle of lowering the back end of my car...i have the bolts and washers off the end of the torsion bars and the dampers are off, i have got a jack under both calipers to take the weight off but i need to know which way to hit the bars because at the minute they aren't moving!!!

is it hit the top bar from the drivers side which will push it towards the passenger side of the car and then the other way on for the lower bar??

any help would be great thanks

Have you taken out the offset washers? They could be stopping it from moving

haha i need more than a beer with the hassle this has been, i'm not actually doing anything now...but more to do tomorrow so still in the middle of the job...and yes the washers are out so i'm obviosly just not hitting it hard enough!!

what do most people use to put on the bar to hit it with???

ok will try again tomorow...i'v been using a 7lb sledge hammer and the longest bar out of my socket set today and got nowhere

Get your self a propane bottle from bnq heat it up the bobs your uncle and fannies your aunt it will pop out.

Top driver side, bottom passengers side. Be carefull if there seized as it will start to knock your hub off thats wht mine this before the heat

they can be knocked out any direction to remove them fully what is not needed to lower it wack the top one out <<< and the bottom one >>>

i did it with a 7lb hammer , blow torch and 3 of those bars out of a socket set plugged together Smile

ok so i've been hitting away this morning after heating up the bars...i have a little bit of movement on the top bar

 


however it seems that instead of going straight through the trailing arm itself is starting to move!!!

 


 


and the other end of the bar hasn't budged at all...ignore the bolts in the end of bars the washers are definately out

 


can someone please tell me if this is as it should be or do both ends of the bar need to come free and the trailing arm stay where it should be???

any help appreciated as i'm starting to tear my hair out now!!!

Try knocking the other way, that way the trailing arm won't come off the axle tube. Alternatively park the car near a wall and put a decent block of timber between arm and wall.
