I've spent the past week trying to work out what's up with my 206 and im out of idea's Question

51 plate 206 gti, used it last Friday and it was fine, went to start it on Saturday morning and it wouldn't strike. Connected up some jump leads and started straight away. Drove to Brighton (30 miles) faultlessly, no battery warning lights. Went to drive home again and it wouldn't start, wouldn't bump start either Confused then after 5mins decided to start. Tested the battery at home, 12.9V with the ignition off/ 12.6V ignition on. Gave it one last try before going for a new battery and it's started first time every time!

I figured it was just being a princess, went to start it on thursday and it rattled like a bag of spanners, hunting at idle and kicked on the engine management light Rolling Eyes have tried it since and it starts as normal and drives fine but the light is still up.

Any idea's? I've had issues before with lamba sensors but nobodys been able to say what caused the fault, just stung me for resetting the fault code

I would try a new battery first, a low or dying one will cause all sorts of problems.

Possible bad earth-strap connection due to interminent problem behaviour.

Where would i start looking for that? check for tightness? signs of corrosion?

Look at both +/- connections at the battery and the strap(s) from the -ve to the chassis/gearbox,
that they are on tightly and making good contact. Remember there is over 300Amps flowing through
there when cranking to start, so even what looks like an 'OK' connection might not be good enough.

When its playing up if you take a jump lead and connect one end to a good earth point on the engine or gearbox then the othner end of the jump lead onto the negative side of the battery and if it starts and runs better its the earth strap that needs attention---also be very carefull but while your trying this make sure your jump leads are connected to good metal points to ensure the connection and again if it picks up with a good earthed jump lead the earth strap needs sorting.

This is correct but I wouldn't encourage anyone to bridge any
connections on a car battery for fault-finding.

The possibility of full-cockup is just too great.
Visual/physical inspection is better.

onAgain v9977 dont just post your theories to me if others have suggested the same things as me,if you want to challenge what people are saying dont enclose my writing. Also i wasnt suggesting bridging of a connection just putting a new temporary one in place with the aid of jump leads-people jump cars off every day without any problems at all.
