Just test drove a 1.4 diesel 2003. When you let your foot off the gas there is a whine noise. Anyone know if this is a problem ?

Not sure if it's the same thing, but when I'm slowing (foot off the gas) it sounds similar to an airplane acceleration whistle, so I'm told.
Mine is a 2.0.
