Yesterday while driving around i depressed the clutch to change down a gear and it click/clunked and the pedal hit the floor...my first reaction was that the clutch cable had broken.

But i touched the pedal again and it popped back up and then the clutch worked fine so the cable is still intact??

Any ideas?

sorry should have mentioned the noise sounded like it came from the pedal end rather than the engine/gearbox end so i guess cable.

It's the clutch self adjusting mechanism, unless it happens to often I wouldnt worry about it.

Yes it sounds like the cable self adjusting ratchet is worn. But personally I WOULD worry about it as it won't get better and is liable to slip the ratchet and let the clutch out sharply when you don't want it like at the end of gearchange or even worse when waiting to move off at a junction, that wouldn't be funny. They usually go when you're putting the clutch in ( as you've found) but there's your first warning. It's probably going to leave you stranded with no ability to change gears on the wettest day

I would put a new cable in as soon as possible

same happened to mine a couple of month back the self adjuster had let go of the cable and re gripped further down the cable, mine struggled to go in first and grinded in reverse though was clutch at first, i got mine done for £68 quid all in and was a genuine cable.... unless you have replaced a self adjusting cable your self before get a pro to do it, you only get get one shot mess it up and your buying another new cable... i do most things myself but let the garage do this one
this 206 is driving me nuts but shes plenty of life left yet..........
