What diagnostics machine did you connect up to the car?

Weve had them come into work before and they owners have said theyve had it read and nothing has come up. As soon as weve connected ours up, its shown a list of codes. Sometimes the cheap code readers arnt much use, not saying thats the case with yours but ive never had one in at work with the light displayed and yet no codes. It might be worth trying another garage.

When does it cut out? When slowing down to a stop or randomly?

Hi

Just an idea with it cutting out, it could be the coil pack that is causing the problem. They are know to cause the same problems on mk2 clios, so it could be worth changing, dont think they are too expensive. Other things i think it could be are either tdc sensor or idle control valve. Both cause similar problems when bad mainly engine cutting out etc.

As said above, I'd want to read the codes with a reliable reader first just to make sure nothing was missed

You don't say whether, after the first engine stoppage, it's ok then for the rest of the journey or whether it keeps doing it

If the crank/rpm sensor signal causes the running engine stoppage you'd get a fault code stored and I'd expect a fault code for an ignition coil fault too.

It seems like a temperature related fault with something going open/ short circuit whilst it's warming up (although 15mins is a long time for an engine warming up in Summer).

When there's no fault code stored with a running engine stopping then it can be because the ECU was out of action when the fault occured and therefore unable to store anything but if the EML comes on long before the engine cuts out then it won't be that

You say
the engine mangement light keeps coming on then cuts out when its on half way on the temperture gage
so does the light keep coming on well before the engine cuts out or is it pretty much together?

well to be honest it its pretty much all together, ive had a few people look at it and they have no idea what it could be?

And after the first engine stopping from cold, it restarts ok straightaway? or do you have to wait awhile before it evenutally restarts? The fault doesn't then happen again for the rest of the journey?

if its not coming up with faults then its intermittent, my best guess is a coil pack, i had the same issue with my 1.1, so i bought a new coil pack but never fitted it as i just decided to hit the coil pack with a spanner and it seem to fix it, Smile

So if you are interested i have a coil pack for a 1.1 sitting in my shed, Smile or you can try my way, haha
