Just recently when turning the key to start, the speedo and tacho needles
whack downwards then go back to normal. This seems to only happen when
first starting. If I turn off and restart,it seems to be ok.
Could it be the battery?

How far do they flick down as mine used to do this and the battery was fine. I thought it was the needles just re-setting?

As above, it's just the needles resetting.

If it was the battery you'd notice dimmed dashboard lights, issues starting in the morning and various other tell tale signs.

It's fine.

OK,I won't worry too much then. Just odd it's only just started doing it and I've had the car for 8 years.
