Hello,

I'm new to this forum!

I am going to look at a 2005 Hdi 1.6 GTi on Saturday with a view to buy it.

It's done 66k, full service history and just had a full pug service carried out.

I've read the issues with the DPF and seen how much it can cost at Peugeot, so as rule of thumb I always have a separate savings account for major car issues, so £750 will be kept for this. I've owned a mk1 mr2 for 7 years so I am familiar with keeping money for unexpected issues!

Are there any places in particular to look at for rust and mechanical issues?

As a member of two MR2 forums I know how valuable these forums are, I owe my life to some people for the issues they've sorted for me, so if I can help in the future I shall Smile

Welcome.

I think most will tell you not to bother with the 1.6 and go with the 2.0 HDI but someone will give you more details.

I guess the main things to check are that the cambelt and water pump have been done and check the rear axle for play.

I've never known a 206 rust so should be fine there.

Aside from the DPF, I had a big spend when it came to replacing the clutch and flywheel (DMF). Cost near enough £1000 to get sorted - so worth watching for this!

Also worth listening for seized rear calipers (a fairly rhythmic squeak that varies with your speed, and may not always occur -tends to stop under braking) - that was priced at £180 per side (because changing the caliper involves other bits and bobs being done too).

Other than that, great cars - usably powerful and very easy to get more from with a remap, bearing the potential issues in mind! Smile

Ahhh thanks for the quick replies.

I prefer the 1.6 mainly as it costs £100 for tax. Plus the 110hp over 90hp I prefer as well.

Clutches are non serviceable items so you're always going to have to replace one so that's not what I consider a major issue.

Rear calipers - another thing to go, my Mr2 is renowned for issues with those. I could change the calipers myself anyway or rebuild them.

I wouldn't go down the remap route, I start a new job in a fortnight and will be covering a minimum of 385 miles a week, so i plan to drive like a saint and get the most out of it. I will however blast it on a friday Smile

My mr2 will be rebuilt over the winter so the money saved from a remap will go towards HKS cams, cam gears, HG and head work Smile

Have a quick search on the forum and then wait for MrBSI or Seabook to come along.

They have many good reasons not to buy the 1.6 HDI engine.

as said above, don't buy the 1.6 HDi.

Turbo oil feed pipe tends to block up and blown the turbo (blame the wrong oil)

DMF are expensive to repair/replace when failed,

DPF/FAP nearly always goes wrong since that was the 1st gen design (which will cause a lot to replace or remove),

and also suffer from other common 206 problems as well Laughing

I've replaced my engine 2 times in 5 years so I'm prepared for problems that may crop up.

I'm going to view it with a 10yr vehicle technician as well who'll plug it in to his diagnostic laptop too.

So. your going to put away £750 for the cost of the repairs when something goes wrong.. Why not put that £750 towards the 2.0 HDi, and not have to bother worrying about the common problems with the 1.6 110 GTi HDi?

This.

So, your potentially looking at:

Rebuilt turbo: £500 +
(not factoring in that the wrong grade of engine oil could have sludged up the entire engine)
Removal or fix DPF system: £500 +
(haven't heard of a DPF removal of a 206 DV6 that has went without fault yet)
DMF: £1000
Plus other general 206 related issues.

Fair enough you might have money aside, but as a daily driver can you afford to have it off the road for days at a time if it's in getting fixed? Replacing the DMF is a massive job due to all the components of the DPF system that need to be removed to get the box out.

Having owned a DV6, I'd just buy a DW10 and get it mapped. Only known issue is the lower pulley which is a reasonably cheap fix and the engine itself is bullet proof.
