Hi Guys,
Last September got a 1.4 LX Peugeot (1999), for £500 from a local dealer, and immediately fell in love with it! It was a great little runner, with cheap insurance, and a decent fuel consumption.
On Friday, I lent the car to my brother, as his car is in the garage. He needed it to go down to the shops, alas that was the last time I saw the car in working order. He was doing a hill start, and decided that it'd be a good idea to dump the clutch after revving it to 4500. As you can guess, the stock clutch didn't agree with that, and pretty much disintegrated, causing him to roll back into a Land Rover that was speeding up to catch the lights, (my brother panicked and thought the clutch was the brake pedal).
I don't think the other driver was paying much attention, because he didn't slow down, and shunted my poor pug up the rear end.
Damage to his car included a reasonable dent to the front bumper, and some light scuffs on the grille.
Damage to my car included a disintegrated clutch, concaved tailgate and rear bumper, one shattered rear light, and the dreaded bent chassis. Needless to say I'm pretty p**sed at the moment. It (was) my first car, and I only had two months until I had my first year of NCD under my belt.
My brother called up the insurance, and they came and looked at it the next day at the garage. Got a call on Monday and they've decided that it's cheaper to replace than to repair, which is very unfortunate, since I loved the little thing. I went to the car to get my camera, (also broken thanks to it being in the boot at the time), my stereo, and what's left of my sub and amp.
Now I'm in the market again for another car, and really would like another 206! I'm toying with the idea of getting a 1.6 HDi, (non-intercooled version), to get more miles for less fuel, however I've seen some bad rep on here about the engine. The insurers paid me out just under £1000 for the car, so I'm willing to chip in a bit for a new one.
My question is: Should I get a 1.6HDi or a 1.6XSi, and roughly what will the insurance on both be?
(For 17 year old driver, [18 in 3 months], 1 claim, no convictions. Car kept on drive, no engine modifications intended).
Thanks guys!

all you can do is try a few diffrent co's to give you a rough idea on price mate as they look at lots of diffrent things to get your price.
also why do you have a claim if your brother was driveing it will be against him not you.
even if he is on your insurance it was his driveing not yours so claim will against his name not yours

I wrote that a bit badly - he called up and claimed on his part, but then gave me the money to replace the car as it was his fault. The claim was for something that happened three weeks before, (a local hoodlum thought it would be funny to smash two of my windows in and then kick my rear bumper). I had to claim as it was too expensive for me to repair without the insurer's help at the time.

ah right got you now, i know you was skint but would have worked out better to have got glass from a scrap car and not had a claim as this will cost you more when you do come to renewal time.
as said you can do some online quotes to give you a rough idea on price mate.

I was looking around for some glass and a panel, but there were no local scrappies selling the glass, and I needed the car two days after it occurred. Will do, thanks for the advice!

I've skim read it - it seems that people have more trouble with the intercooled diesel engine, which I thought was the 2.0HDi, not the 1.6HDi, although I may be wrong. If the 1.4HDi is more reliable, I'd rather get that - can't be arguing with 60mpg!
It's not too bad, as the claim wasn't too much. The premium went up £260, but I moved houses to a more rural area, and it's started to go down again. Luckily no-one was hurt! Only my brother's pocket

In a standard 206 the 2.0 hdi is no intercooler and bulletproof, the 1.6 has an intercooler and is full of problems

Havent really heard much go wrong with them, there no where near as fault ridden as the 1.6hdi though, only real issue with them is in standard tune they can be a bit gutless at times. Other than that, just regular service items really.

It (was) my first car, and I only had two months until I had my first year of NCD under my belt. |
How far did he roll backwards down the hill after 'panicking'? Must have been some distance if the land rover wasn't even partially at fault after hitting him up the back 'without trying to stop'.
Also how come you 'only had two months until you had your first year of NCD?
As in a later post you said you'd already had a claim 3 weeks before after a 'local hoodlum' trashed your car.

It was a 1 in 3 hill, but I wasn't there so don't know how far back it rolled, but he will still rolling back when he got rear-ended. The land rover was speeding (around 45mph according to the police report), to catch the lights.
I had the 2 months of NCD until I claimed on the damage done. It happened in the same month, hence I still had 2 months to go until my 1 year of NCD.
Satisfactory explanation?

I would forget about 206 because they cost more to insure than any other cars in my opinion,as much as i like and loved 206 i would not bother again.
Not unless you found good deal and you can get good price to insure it why not.

I got a few quotes this morning for a nice little 1.4HDi up in Chelsea, and it was about £4000 p/y, but I'm considering getting a telekinematics box fitted to get a lower premium.
