i have noticed recently the brake pedal on my gti feels abit spongy and makes a quiet hiss when pressed.
the discs and pads are low but still have a few hundred miles left in them. and there's no leaks anywhere.
was thinking about bleeding the system, has anyone else had this problem?
my pug is a gti 138 2000

i am currently having major problems with my gti 180 and spongy brake pedal after doing my axle bearing i have recently found a very small split in the rear passenger brake caliper piston seal which is causing my spongyness
i recommend checking the sealing on the calipers
1.jack the car up remove wheel
2. undone & remove caliper brakepad holding bolts (18mm if i remember correctly)
3. undone & remove caliper holding bolts (19mm if i remember correctly)
4. pull the caliper away from the disc and get a friend to pump the pedal until the piston is fully extended and check all of the seal for any split no matter how small
5. tp put the piston back in you need to turn the piston clockwise i use a set of long nose pliers

im having major problems with mine at the minute, ive tried everything i possibly can so got it booked in at a garage now to get them have a look, the quiet hissing is just a rubber gaiter behind the gearbox that covers a part of the mechanism from pedal to servo, i would give it a good bleeding mate cheap enough and doesnt take to long so worth eliminating before anything else, hope you have better luck than me.

took the rear calipers off and found the seal on the slider drivers side has a split, so will be buying a new set for both calipers. going to check the front aswell.
getting a set of drilled and grooved discs for the front as i think the discs are slightly warped.

Found out that unless you are a trained mechanic you cannot buy caliper parts as the brakes are a safety issue and shouldnt be tampered with. Im having to get a garage to get them for me via a trade account.

You can get the parts if you hunt around. It's then a question of your skills, confidence, etc. Been rebuilding brake cylinders/calipers for years with no issues.

I got used to it after a while, i broke the gti as i got another 1. Was certain the rear calipers needed a strip down.

So your parts supplier thinks the only dangerouse part that can be removed by a non professional is the internal patrs of a brake caliper¿????just taking a wheel off could be classed as dangerouse if your daft enuf...shop else where.
