Most would just throw in another engine.

Yes, I strongly suspect they've worn. Or some cap(s) are loose-ish.

I might include this in a general overhaul I already have planned. It is a big job but the CS is all over the place and it sounds scrapey with wobbly CS pulley and flywheel.

Whats the last 8 of your vin and i can send to you a whole dismantle guide from peugeot with bolt torques?

I don't now these engines that well but if you can drop the sump and get he main bearing caps off without removing the engine you can usually fit new bearings relatively easily and I have done this on quite a few cars in the past. On quite a few cars removing the front or rear cap with the engine in situ is a massive job and if that is the case you may be better just pulling the engine and regrinding the crank.

Loosen all the main bearing caps bolts (nuts?) 1/2 turn. Then remove one cap completely; to get the top 1/2 shell out I have a very thin blade screw driver and give it a bump with my hand to get the bearing moving then using a feeler gauge you can push the bearing around the crank until it is at the bottom and it will drop out. Re-instate using the thin blade screw driver to push it around. Re-install the bottom bearing cap with new bearing tighten then loosen 1/2 turn. repeat until all shells are replaced then fully torque all bearing caps.

This only works if the bearings are only just starting to rumble and the crank isn't also worn. If, when you pull the bearings, there is quite a bit of cooper showing through the white metal on the bearings then the crank is probably in need of a regrind.

Lots and lots of people will scream bodger but I have had this work and last anywhere from 15,000 - 60,000 miles but equally on a few cars and I have looked at the crank and then removed the engine for crank regrind or, in one instance, just scrapped the car so i have been selective what I will try it on.

I noticed a crankshaft for £25 i think on ebay yesterday...and shells for cheap too but while the shaft looked ok(as much as can tell that is)i think people tend to replace the shells and rather than throw the old ones away they have them in there hands and try to sell the used parts...as they often look used without box.packs.grease etc....if u are into the shaft just look under 206 parts or even specify to save time...

I want to replace the half bearing shells sometime soon so torque values/procedure and any diagrams would be very helpfull.

IF the caps are underneath (in the sump) as kandlbarrett said, I should be able to take my time with it.

PSA do 'repair' thickness shells which are colour-coded for the specific engine serial.
