Morning everyone,
Has anyone ever had their steering wheel lock into place whilst driving along?
The wife was driving her 206 (1.4 HDI 53 Reg) yesterday and the steering wheel lock kicked in mid way round the round about!
Luckily it unlocked and she was able to get off the round about but has caused her some concern (especially with the little one in the back)!
Has anyone had this happen before, and if so how did you solve it?
Do i need a new steering column? :s
Cheers,
Jon

I would not think it locked. I would have thought you have a power steering issue. Check the belt and fluid. Has it been excessively noisy lately?

Its 100% impossible for the mechanical steering lock on a 206 to engage while the ignition key is turned on.

Key goes in fine all the way, no problems there and never had any issues with it.
Will check belts and fluid tonight! Car recently had a service which included fresh fluid in the pot, otherwise no noise whatsoever coming from the belt or pump!
She has reported a 'clonk' from the front passenger side suspension......could something have jammed and locked it in position do you think?

Snapped spring maybe? Or wishbone suspension going. Worth checking all suspension parts.

I suppose the obvious question is after it happened did everything return to normal when the key was taken in and out again?
Have a good look around the track rod ends and wish bones to check for anything out of place.
Also with the engine running keep turning the wheel from one side to the other and see if the fault can be reproduced. If you wanted to be really particular i suppose you should go to and empty car park and do it whilst slowly moving. Doing it stationary does put extra wear and tear on the car.

Will have a check round those parts tonight i think!
Everything returned to normal after the steering unlocked which is odd!
She said she took it out for a short spin earlier and all seemed fine! She turned the wheels whilst moving slowly and stationary but could not reproduce the effect!
I am wondering if it is the spring that has gone (if i remember they are 40mm Spax springs on the front) or event he top bearing?
Thanks for your help so far chaps!

TBH if a coil goes or bearing fails it's not going to lock the steering and then return to normal.
Is the key particularly worn ? or maybe ignition barrel ? Is the car very high mileage ?

Had a quick look tonight, suspension look fine, cannot see or feel any play in things that shouldnt either?
I didnt however get a chance to nose inside the power sterring fluid tank so will do that tomorrow!
Key is like new, hardly any wear, barrel feels nice and 'tight' not sloppy (no pun intended). The car is on 75K so not particularly high, especially for a diesel!

My steering felt funny while going around two particular roundabouts which were off camber. Got a bad rear shock but it felt like it affected the steering.

Hmm will check the rears as well then!
I need to change the shocks on the rear anywho (and adjust the torsion bar) so will give me a good opportunity to have a proper poke this weekend!
