Last night i came out work after doing 12 hours, my car would not start, it would turn as if it wanted to go but cause of lack of power would not go so i bump started it and got it going whilst driving it home i was a bit erratic with it to try to get some juice in the battery (by erratic i mean driving high revs etc) on route the engine light came on and when stoping at lights the revs would drop below 1000rpm to about 600rpm and then bounce back up over1000rpm and keep doing that whenever i stop, i have asked a couple of people that i know and they say buy a new battery cause of the low temperatures the battery i have is knackered and that is why it is doing this, i just wanted some advice whether anyone else has ad this problem with the cold snap or was t me driving it erraticly that has caused something else to go wrong? If it could be solved by a replacement battery do i just get a normal battery of a higher wattage. Any advice would be a good help.

Cheers pete

Looking at Euro Car Parts I would say an Exide 53Ah/540CCA would be ideal. A battery could be the culprit given the symptoms. Easy enough to check if you have a voltmeter otherwise pop to halfords, kwikfit etc and get a free check

Age and type of car? Modern cars can be buggers with low battery voltage but it could be as simple as a bad battery connection or earth fault. Check the leads connected at your battery and the negative lead from the battery where it connects to the engine and body.

Was the engine (charge) light on all the time or only when revs dropped?

If you are capable check the electrolyte level and put the battery on "trickle charge" over night.

The battery (finally replaced) on my daughters car would slowly discharge but an overnight charge and it would be fine again for many months.

If you are in the AA, RAC or other recovery organisation most will do a full electrical charge and battery test.

Plenty of places are much cheaper than Eurocarparts.
