Correct my guess if wrong:

Engine cranks but doesn't start, managed to flat out the battery.

Jump-started fine, but before that cleaned the grille, which was covered with wet snow layer (and ofc the bonnet was open)

Would the engine not start due to lack of oxygen? The grille under the bumper was snow-free though.

if you have a standard air intake the start of the pipe is behind the passenger wing Wink

Ah right, yes that's the one that is under the wing.

So it wasn't blocked. Probably I failed to warm the glowplugs and cranked the engine to hastily. It wasn't too cold outside, but probably I should've waited in ignition (heat phase) slightly longer.
Then I cranked it for too long I think, and all successive attempts to start the engine (even with full glowplug heating) failed (too much diesel intake, -- I'm coming from when petrol flushes over sparkplugs, but this is diesel fwiw)

Weird. I tried starting the engine every half-hour later, but the battery was givinig up faster and faster. Until I ultimately jump-started and all was fine.. Wonder where the true problem lies..

If it is not sealed battery then check electrolyte and top up as appropriate then charge the battery over night with an appropriate charger.

I don't think your car is plex so either leave the battery on the car to charge or remove it to charge. It is up to you but remove and you will have to reset clock and any security code for stereo.

As you suggest you were either:-
To keen and didn't wait for glow plugs to pre-heat the intake air or
Your battery is starting to fail and cold weather has finished it or
You only do short journeys and the battery doesn't get enough charge to recovery and over a period of time gradually looses its capacity or
You have left the inside light, stereo or other equipment switched on or
Less likely your alternator is not working correctly.

Car hasn't been used for 10 days, explains a lot now (had to jump start even this morning agaon). Will use it to commute again starting tomorrow, will keep an eye on battery-sensitive Do's & Don'ts, thank you all. It wasn't the snow on grille after all Wink
