It does sound a bit gearbox related, does it stop when you press clutch?
Do you have a quickshift fitted?
Have you checked your gearbox oil level/type etc?
Does it make a difference hot/cold engine?

when i press the clutch down it goes quieter but doesn't go completely when coasting at slow speeds in neutral its still noticeable. No quickshift fitted and i have changed the gearbox oil to no effect on the sound, also no difference at different temperatures thanks for the reply

Might be something other than gearbox/clutch if it doesnt go away when you press clutch in.
Engine?

Does it do it in all gears?
I noticed it was when torque was going through the system so yes it could be.
'Wouldn't overhaul the whole box though just for the whine unless it's very loud & annoying.

+1.
Check your gear-links especialy since it started only in 5th gear.
Also check the left-hand rubber gearbox-mount because once that becomes loose, the gearbox angle changes and the gear-links are not aligned properly, even if very slightly. (This also causes a 'thud' or 'gap' when starting from standstill in 1st gear and releasing clutch quickly)
