Hi, I searched through the forum but found nothing helpful.

I had the rev meter and speedo meter both with what it seemed a stuck needle...so I got the instrument out and as suggested on here I removed the plastic front and removed the needles sprayed some WD-40 and put everything back on...went for a drive and to my astonishment it worked!!! BUT i noticed another Problem which is bigger then having a rev counter not working....
My Kilometer counter on the top just blanked :/ I have nothing...I tried switching the engine off and on but still nothing...

I have a 1999, 1.4l (pre-plex) without oil gauge...have I destroyed the ribbon? I sure hope not!

Thank you

EDIT: One think I didnt do before removing the cluster is disconnecting the battery which i thought of it after every thing was done stupid (thought I should mention it)

You'll have to check the ribbon, sometimes the plastic/glass front over the mileage counter can come away.

Cant remember tbh, you'll have to take it off and look at it again.

ok, got back to the car this time at nights, and noticed that if I get close to the instrument and try hard enough I can actually make out the numbers...and the trip counter also works because i saw it reset ,....Is it now a case of bulb???

thanks

There is a bulb behind the counter and when you removed the cluster you disturbed it and it then blew.
I have done exactly the same too, and many others so it's nothing to worry about and very easy to fix.

I would carefully check all other bulbs behind the cluster as after 14 years the fillament becomes frail and even a slight knock will mean they blow soon after.

Yeah its definitely the bulb just behind the ribbon otherwise the numbers wouldn't be readable at all. Be careful when taking the cluster apart cause you can easily split the ribbon. Its glued and comes apart easily. I made that mistake and never found a way to glue it together. It needed pressure to make contact with the board and I finally gave up and got myself another one.

thanks all! Thats a relief! I will go down and somehow change the bulb....the only problem is that I have bought led's with the "same" fitment (thought about changing all bulbs back then but never done it) yesterday since the cluster was open I tried but they fit too loosely and I tried to adjust the metal connectors on the bulb and they still wont fit good!!!

www.ebay.co.uk/itm/10x...51a4b63bba

509t is the fitment right? would a pug dealer have the exact bulb?

thanks

They are very very cheap those pigmy lamps. I would replace all of them for sure. However, I would strongly recomend normal incardecent and not LED personaly. Keep the old OEM holders and just replace the bulb itself only.

You do not have to mess-around with the ribbon or even take the unit appart, just unscrew each white plastic holder and out they come.

thanks for your help! I managed do replace them with the LED's which I had! With the long nose plyer I managed to twist the metal parts for a tight fit. I havent replaced them all, I replaced those that illuminate the Counters and the milage counter. now I have white needles instead of yellowish needle hehe Smile

I didnt have to take the unit apart..just removed it twisted and removed old bulbs and inserted new modified led's...

thanks again!
