I have had a lot of good advice and help from people on the site. I wanted to be able to give some help back....

For the last few weeks I have had an intermittent hollow distant metallic knocking / rattling sound. It was very different to any suspension knock I have ever heard.

When in the car it sounded like it was coming from behind the steering wheel / speedo area of the dash.

I checked all trim etc in the car and could not find a solution.

I then started to check through the engine bay. I checked the pollen filter coolant reservoir etc.

It turned out to be the black metal tray that the ECU is bolted to. It is fitted to the car with a bolt at the front right and two metal pins on the left of the tray that are seated into two holes in the engine bay / drivers wing.

I am unsure if these should have rubbers on but mine did not. I have taped the pins so they fit snug in the holes, and refitted the tray.

The sound is now completely gone.

I hope this helps someone else, as having a rattle or knock you can't locate can drive you mad!

Smile

Mine was intermittent. It's worth checking Smile just tap the case on top of the ECU to test. You will hear straight away of it is knocking.

Yes it's meant to have rubber grommets at the holes in the chassis.
Good job.

with this rattle, did it go away if you put your hand on the dash close to the window?

I have a rattle in the same area, however mine stops when I put my hand on the dash, or hit it really hard Razz

No. Mine was intermittent and sounded very metallic. Check your a pillar is not loose? Also check the fuse cover and tray are locked in place. Another good thing to check is the ring that holds the comms has not come loose.
