Hi all, as the subject suggests I am currently getting an ‘ABS/ ESP not functioning’ error showing on the multiline-display and the ABS and ESP lights on the instrument panel.

So, I’ve narrowed the problem down over the past couple days with some searching on here and trial and error. It seems to only come on when I am about a quarter turn off the full lock to the left. I get the ‘ABS/ESP’ error message and both lights illuminate on the dash panel.

If I then turn the car off and back on again, the ESP light is turned out on the dash and all I get is the ABS error message on the screen and the ABS light is the only one that shows. It does however clear after about 20-30 seconds of the car being turned back on and me driving away.
I can drive normally and it stays off until I get near the full lock to the left again, I don’t see the light or error when full locking to the right.

...anyone have any similar issues or know how to get this sorted?

As it is intermittent I’m talking a wild guess at it being a sensor or something....? with it happening on left lock only is there a particular side i should be looking at? Any particular signs?
I did take the front wheels off for a quick look and there is no snagging of wires or any obvious sign of damage.

Any help would be appreciated Smile

I have a 2003/2004 180 with about 60 on the clock and its multiplexed I think.

Or your steering rack removed and refitted. Or steering arm replaced ? I think you need to go dealer and make zero position calibration of steering wheel. There is a sensor looking steering wheel inside of Com2000 unit.

Do you have HID Xenon lights ? Passenger side HID ballast can cause ESP light due to close ABS/ESP pump.

Not sure if you're asking if I've had the steering rack or arm replaced or suggesting it as a fix but no I havent had any work done to the front since I've had the car.
I have a tight enterance to my driveway and have always sharp left turned into the drive with no issues or lights for the past three years.

I'll look into the steering calibration ...is it just a simple allignment? as my steering is preety much straight when driving in a straight line.

No, i dont have HIDs, just the standard phase2 lights.

This is usually caused by the steering wheel not being straight, when the fronts wheels are I.e. tracking out. Needs to be noticably out though. You could get it code read, at a guess could need new comms unit. Steering wheel angle sensor is built into it, as wheel as steering wheel.

Thanks for the reply mate, that's not the kind of news I was hoping for! ...sounds expensive!! What kind of monies are we talking for one of those units and are they easy to fit?
I was thinking of having the codes looked at on the weekend so will update soon as I get some info.

Was reading some old threads and was hoping to hear something along the lines of faulty sensor or a cracked ring ...not sure where and what to look for there :-/

If your abs light is preeminently on, then it could be cracked ring on driveshaft or a faulty sensor. This is different to an ESP fault. A code read is the best starting point.
