I have a 1998 Peugeot 206 1.4 8 valve petrol car, head gasket went so I decided to replace engine with used out of running mot failure car. I took the engine out of a Saco 1.4 petrol after advise on here that they were the same engine.
I stopped ALL electrical components from old engine onto new, also inlet manifold complete and exhaust manifold, changed flywheel, clutch, flywheel sensor, everything you can think off old engine onto new engine, using original ECU.
The car started first touch of the key and does do every time, the only problem is that the revs shoot up to 6000rpm without any throttle.
Cleaned throttle body and idle valve.
Tried resetting idle control valve though I found two ways on searching, turn ignition on and off 6/7 times using a 30 second cycle, also it was suggested that turning ignition on for 30 seconds off and the going for start will reset. Needless to say neither worked.
The wiring loom is the type that has a plug and twist connector under the air box, but I cannot see that being a problem as the car starts.
With the ignition on but engine not running the cooling fan comes on but I have checked all the plugs on the engine are fully home and locked in place.
All suggestion welcome

Has the throttle cable been connected? I gave no idea on this engine, do they share the same engine type/number?
Any engine light?

I have had the throttle cable connected and disconnected no difference, the engines are the same apparently I am informed by other members when I was looking for an engine, I fact this engine was recommended and the link given to me on here.
Sounds to me like a leak on the inlet manifold causing the excessive revs, but I am partly deaf so I would not be able to hear if there was a noise around the engine nor would you hear it when he car is revving 6000rpm

You could try spraying some wd40 around the inlet if you think there's a leak, but it would have to be pretty major to cause that high revving. Icv valve clean? Checked all wiring?

Ok update, removed inlet manifold and Lund hat since the car was a 1999 and engine was from a 2002 that he inlet manifold ports did not match up, so I fitted another inlet manifold which lined up correctly, checked all rubber gasket sealers etc, fitted throttle body after recleaning but alas no different, sill reving at 6000 revs, engine runs well does not miss a beat if I could cure the over reving.
The wiring loom is the type that has a twist plug under the air filter, cannot see that being wrong as all electrical components are working ok, starts on the key ok, only un-usual item is that the cooling fan comes on after 15/20 seconds when ignition is left on switched on.
Perhaps I am resetting the idle valve incorrectly, perhaps somebody could suggest there way of doing it.

Right so youve used the wiring loom from your pre 2000 206 and fitted a 2002 engine?
There is a substaintial difference between the two engines, starting with as youve found the different inlet tracks, different oil filter housing and more importantly a three pin ECU. If there is NO engine codes, and i mean none, try a different ICV for a test and check the manifold pressure for leaks
What other work has been carried out on the engine? All connections attached?

Would it make a massive difference being older and newer engine, apart from the wiring issues? Are all the connections connected i.e. nothing left over?
Any pics of the two engines?

The Citroen Saxo 8v 1.4 engine in basc form is the same as the peugeot 206 8 valve 1.4.
I also changed the flywheel, flywheel sensor, clutch assembley, crank sensor, temp sensors etc from the old engine onto to new engine, so alll electrical components are as original including the ecu inlet manifold and exhaust manifold.
I have now also changed the inlet manifold as I found that the ports did match up.
I also used the wiring loom that was on the original engine with the twist connector under the air box, my thoughts are with the twist connector is it fitted the wrong way in some form, yet all electrical components work with the key, ie the started, ecu, etc. but the connector is the only thing I have not tried playing with.

Possibility of a bent pin, this might throw up a code atleast though.
Check your ECU pins, and wiring connections

So the ecu and wiring loom, are yours Taft were originally fitted? Just the sensors you've changed?

The ecu, wiring loom, and all sensors on the engine are original that was on the working engine which had head gasket failure, I took all of them and swopped them onto the repalcement engine, so all electrical components are married together
