I've had the 206 for a couple of weeks now and I'm becoming very curious about it's history. I'm wondering if anyone on here has owned her or knows someone who has as I've a few questions about her.

The registration is X174AGW, a silver 1.4LX 5 door. She was first registered in South East London in 2000. She's since been to the Midlands and Teeside from what the MoT history says. She's got silver and black WR alloys on at the moment with the brake callipers sprayed red and fancy gear knob so that leads me to think a younger driver had her at some point.

I know she's had a bump at some point due to slight imperfections in the bodywork but it looks professionally repaired, it's certainly not an amatuer job from the condition of the paintwork. Later in her life someone has tried to touch up a couple of minor spots around the edge of the driver's door which have bubbled but that's an easy fix. It looks like the work of someone who meant well but time and the elements weren't on their side.

The main thing I'm curious about is the engine. She's surprisingly powerful for a 1.4. She's got the standard airbox and exhaust. At some point she had a sport exhaust which I can tell by a slight scorch mark on the rear bumper which you wouldn't notice unless you really looked for it. She can stay with my mate's 2.0 HDi no problem which makes me curious. Should a 1.4 8v really be that quick? Or has she had things done internally such as a remap or cams etc? Does a standard 1.4 take off like a rocket when it hits 3000rpm? It feels like my brother's old GSX-R750 when he had race cams in it. When he hit 8000rpm there was a surge of power. She also has a lot of torque low down the rev range, more like a diesel engine than petrol.

She's never failed an MoT badly from what the history says. I do know she had the rear axle bearings changed after an advisory 4 years ago, they must have been changed as I know from experience it would be a fail the next year. But were both sides done or just one?

The handling and steering is razor sharp which is great for a 13 year old car. Someone has obviously taken pride in her at some point and her suspension is faultless. There's no roll in corners, no knocks or squeaks at all. I'm surprised at how well she's been looked after in that respect.

In terms of being looked after overall she's done very well. The interior is excellent for her age, there are no scuffs, tears, or rips in the upholstery, the seats are perfect, the door trims are perfect, and the carpet is very clean.

There was no service history with her, not even the owner's manual. Ok so it's a shot in the dark that she may be recognised on here but wouldn't it be something special if she was? Maybe that would like to others being able to trace their car's history too. Afterall, if you buy a used car that becomes your pride and joy wouldn't you like to know where it's been and how it's been treated beforehand?

my 1.4 8valve seems to have some awesome power (easily keeps up with my brothers 138 gti) i have owned my car from 3 years old and have not done anything to my engine either !!

My 1.4 is 1.7 seconds quicker to 100mph than my old 206 GTi 180 (according to 'fastest laps' published figures) Smile

The 1.4s don't hang around. It gets up to motorway speeds quick enough, and if the law allowed it, I'm pretty sure the needle would point to 3 figures on the dash without batting an eyelid.

It sounds like Junior has a standard engine then. And if that's the case then she's been well looked after in that respect too. I'm curious here Loud, when Junior is ticking over I can't hear a thing but when I open her up and she goes over 3500rpm she really growls. Does that sound familiar?

If a car on a standard engine can still give power like that after 13 years that says a lot about Peugeot engines. But then my 106 diesel's relaibilty and torque was what kept us with Peugeot this time around. It's making me want to go for the remap if we get our summer bonus in June. 12 bhp more isn't much but up to 20% more economy? That'll pay for itself inside a year.

How's yours on mpg? All I can relate to recently is the old 106 diesel so obviously not a patch on that but still not too bad if I don't rev it hard and stay below 3000 rpm

Yeah Macca I found that she goes down a slip road onto the motorway very rapidly an up to 70mph as you join it. I'm not interested in top speed to be honest. What I do like is that surprising "oomph" to be able to overtake safely, get up to the speed of fellow traffic, etc. It all makes for a very nice car to drive.

yes mate same as mine,although mine is having service and belts next week as i have never done them :/

mine seems ok on fuel,never really checked my mpg :/

I would agree I was surprised when I test drove mine last October. It's a 1.4 16v. Much quicker than I expected.

Since I put the stainless cat back and k&n panel on and cleaned the throttle body it seems even more responsive....

TU3 206 or Citroen C3 will do 3 figure speeds pretty easily once you get going.

Speedo only over reads by 1mph as well when checked with a gps.

The TU3 is a bloody good engine, a good one is normally quicker then the official figures.

Seriously guys, and MrBSI especially, I'm impressed. I didn't expect that level of performance. I see Kwak's point of why buy a GTi when you have that level of poke in a 1.4. A GTi is nice, I would love my dream of an Imprezza WRX but would it be practical? In the real world where could I use a 180bhp 206 to it's potential? Or a 270bhp Imprezza?

A GTi to me is luxury and status. I would have one tomorrow if I could afford the running costs. But I live in the real world and I'm not rich so it's a 1.4 for me which I'm very happy with

The kwak was one of many bikes i've owned over the years but don't now (got 4 kids instead lol)
The car you own doesn't have to be a Ferrari or Aston Martin to be the best car or most fun car you have ever owned. I've gone from Impreza wrx's, VX220, Boxster S 3.2 and recently a Megane 225 Cup (possibly the most boring car to drive yet) but I find the 206 GTI 180 more fun to drive than any of them, kind of reminds me of my 5GT Turbo days which was the most fun car I have ever driven with 206 now coming a very close second if not first. So it doesnt matter if its a 200 mph super car or a 1.4 206, its what you enjoy, afford and have fun in, thats what counts. Smile
