Mechanic had to pop some putty just below the catalytic converter so he could finish the MOT a couple of weeks ago because of a small crack in the weld on my TU3JP lump.
I knew that I had a small hole near the centre pipe join so decided to buy a new cat.
Came to change the cat over today and by the time it was all unbolted, this is how it came off the car.
basically the only thing holding the pipe in place and stopping it sounding like a tractor was the 17mm bolt that holds the back of the pipe to the gearbox.
Tried to unscrew the lambda sensor and it's that tight in this happened
Don't think the exhaust putty was helping.
Luckily I had ordered a new sensor so this wasn't a problem. I can get the old one out at my leisure and use it as a spare.
Either the old cat was a cheap crappy brand, or it had been on since new and the welds had finally given up.
I was going to do a "How To" guide, but couldn't be bothered taking pictures as I went through each stage, but most of it is self explanatory. The only advice I would give to anyone replacing their own is put 4 nuts to the manifold on loosely and then put the 17mm back into the gearbox nearly all the way. then tighten up the nuts to the manifold to make sure you have a nice tight seal, and then finish off tightening the 17mm before you reconnect the centre pipe. Also worth buying a new fitting kit which includes gasket, manifold nuts and centre pipe nuts, bolts and springs.
It makes a change for a thread on here to be about a catalytic converter being put on a car rather than making it chavtastic and removing it.

Already got a recycler in mind. First time I've ever put an old part in the shed, but don't want the pikeys coming round and chucking it on the back of the pick up.

It would soon vanish if it wasn't locked away out of sight.

Those things are horrible to remove, so fiddly to reach the bolts!

That's an OEM cat for sure. You can tell by the heatshield attached to the main part.
How old is the car? Stuff rusts a lot quicker over there and it's supposedly from the salt for the roads.

Not a problem with deep sockets and a long extension on the ratchet. Didn't take 20 minutes once the wheels were in the air and the stands were under.

Got a place up near the roundabout just of the motorway. Going to see what they give me for it.

Got it from a place on egay. They also trade under the name Yorkshire Exhaust Specialists, Leeds It's got a 2 year warranty so it will still have a warranty when I sell the car, and then after that I don't care if it drops off

What did you replace it with if I might be a nosey b*****d? |
Cars a July 2003 model. New cat is made by BM Catalysts in Nottinghamshire.
