Hi All,

Just had my 206 at the dealers today to check our a whirring noise when steering at very low speed/stationary. Have been told the steering rack is leaking oil and will need to be replaced, £800 inc. Labour. The car is a 2006 1.4 Urban diesel with just over 100k on the clock. Should the steering rack have gone on a car this age? Is it worth my while kicking off with Peugeot customer services?

Dave.

Its outside the 3 year Peugeot manufacturers warranty.

How do you know the rack hasn't suffered impact damage in the past?

By impact damage do you mean from an accident? I've owned the car since new.

Even if it hasnt been in a shunt, 100k is a long time and a lot of movement for the whole car let alone the steering rack, i personally wouldn't be grumbling too much but then i'd be fitting it myself.

I wouldn't be going near a dealer for a start. I'd not hesitate to fit a used rack or see if somebody does refurbished racks.

Can't judge it by the mileage. A car of this age with that mileage is likely to spent it in a straight line. I'd be more worried about something that's spent its time round town going round corners.

Go round a few garages, but keep quiet what peugeot have said, and see what their opinion of the problem is.
Peugeot see £ signs before they even look at the car.

Yes correct, the car has done the vast majority of its mileage on a daily motorway commute. I'll price it at a couple of other garages - FWIW, the dealer had said they may be able to source a second hand rack for ~£200 but labour costs would be the same.

Sounds very fishy for a Peugeot main dealer.

You could try PAS fluid additive that swells the seals etc.

100k is still a lot of use whichever way you cut it. Motorway or not its still being used. Obviously not under as much strain as around town but at the end of the day, its a car with reasonably high mileage. These things are going to start to need replacing. If it was me in the op's situation i'd be inclined to phone around some independent garages and fit a second hand one though for sure.

Sounds more like a power steering pump problem to me. & a lot of pumps 'whir' when steering at low speeds or on their way out. Check for power steering fluid leaks & as V9977 said above, check your fluid level as it could be low or even have air in the system.

I'd be worried if a second hand rack costs £200! Drop me a message if you need a rack as I have one.
