my brakes wont engage till my foot hits the floor. But if i press the brake, let go and press again quickly it will then work.
I've checked the brake fluid and it is still just below maximum.

well if you pump the pedal you can hear air and the the pedal goes hard and when you start engine it goes back to how it was

If the brake fluid level is fine, I'd take a guess at you've got air in the system or the rear shoes need adjusting as the auto adjusters have gone. Possibly the servo is on the way out.
Have you had any work done on the braking system recently?

no nothing it just worrying me becasue when i press the brake it hardley does anything

If you have drums, whip them off and check the adjusters and also the brakes shoes. When my brake shoe fell to bits, the pedal went to the floor.

I am not sure, it does sound like there is air in the brakes, is there not a way to bleed them, a bit like you would a radiator or is that just my stupidity.

Yes, either an ezibleed system or the 2 man push, hold, release method. Simple enough to do unless you have ABS, then you need PP2000 to open the ABS pump.
