Hello i am new to the forum and have been browsing since a bought a 206 1999 last month.
The only real issue i have had with the car is the power steering, it is like it has a split personality, some times when i start the car up the car steering will be nice and light as what i would expect and then other times it will be heavier than normal, not overly heavy but noticeably that it is slightly annoying, its like i have a 50/50 chance of getting what i want.
I have checked the fluid level and that is fine but that is as far as my knowledge goes, i am more of an electrical person.
Has anyone got any ideas what i could check?
Thanks
Dan

well the cause of heavy power steering is caused by 3 cases:
1-The Power steering pump on it's way to fail,so that is why sometimes it works fine, and sometimes not.
2-The Power Steering Rack itself have internal fault that not can be seen by eye,but you can feel it and hear it if you move the steering wheel left and right ,but not a full closer ,just in a hurry like u r have a slalom course, while car is not moving ofcourse,if you feel the steering wheel knocking and hear it too, then your steering is on it way to be out of duty.
3-The power steering pump is working on the AUX. Belt,so check the condition of that belt, and the tensioner, and make sure the belt is tight with engine off ,because if it's not tight, you might have it slipping when the belt gets warm

Thanks for the reply, I will have to check the belt and see if it loose, should there be any play in it at all or so tight that you can barely push it in at all?
I hope it's not the steering rack as that sounds expensive, it done nearly 110,000 miles and I use it every day so they are racking up very quickly. How much would I be looking at getting that fixed?
Would it be a bad idea to leave it or could it cause more damage than its worth?

a small play is fine,to test it,push it down with your fingers, and see how much it bent ,this will tell you if it's loose or not.
Well anything related to the car steer, better be fixed asasp,as this involve your life and others in the street, not trying to scare you,but that is the fact.

What model?
Could be variable PAS problem.
Otherwise the steering valve in the rack does this which means new rack time.

It is a 1999 1.4lx, The belt is fine, only a little play in it. I rechecked the fluid today (in the light this time) and it is a brown watery mess in there so im going to get it drained and refilled with fresh power steering fluid and hope that sorts out the issue. If it is the rack how much am i looking at?
Thanks
Dan
