2004 GTi 138. 52k miles.

For some time now my car has had a slight oil leak, I then changed jobs and was doing about 300 miles a week. I had to top up about 1/2 a litre every month. There was no visible oil leak, but I could tell the rear of the engine was covered. Due to the difficulty of seeing this, as well as a planned timing belt change and gearbox issue. I removed the engine today.

From the pictures you can see the problems, I don't think I have a head gasket failure, but maybe a cylinder head failure? Just below the to[ of the cylinder is a join, with what looks like a sealing paste. The leak starts there and runs down the engine, Only on the back, the front is clean.

I don't think there was oil in the water, but it does smell oily in the header tank, but it could just be me. there's nothing abvious. Ill check the thermostat when I can get it off tomorrow (rounded off nut)

When I drive the car it sounds like there is an air leak or hiss when accelerating, could this be related? Edward has previously mentioned to me about the cylinder cover gaskets causing leaks, but this looks like to much.

The question is do I clean it up and and change the top gaskets, or change the whole engine, there not to expensive to replace. I don't know if ill find one as low miles, not that that matters in this condition!

Send the head to the local engineering shop & ask for it to be tested.

What would they be looking for? Might be easier to just replace, cost wise.

P.S. This engine does not come out with the gearbox on!

If your gonna fix it, do it properly, whats to say a second hand engine wont be on the point of having the same trouble?

I will point out. Only mastic holds the two sections together there.
Take it apart and re stick it after cleaning the faces

Is that genuine?! What would be the best way to get them apart. A local mechanic looked at it today and said its more than likely the head cylinder gaskets perished. Rang Peugeot to order a load of parts, surprisingly cheap.

Next job is to clean everything up before putting it back together.

Yes.

Alot of areas are sealed using mastic engine sealer. I will get you a guide printed off mate
