Okay, so after months of trying to figure out what the hel the banging and creeking is in the rear end of my 206, I've come to the conclusion it's the rear axle that needs replacing.

It only passed it's NCT (MOT) last week! It's definitely not the spare wheel. The bearings look okay etc. I got three mechanics opinions, one said he could find absolutely nothing wrong with it and it was a "mystery noise", and two others said it was either rear shocks or axle, and then said axle.

So got a price for a used rear axle fitted for €200 (so about £175). Just wondering if you guys think this is a good price?

Are the bearing not inside the trailing arm? If you have had the arm off and they look ok, it must be something else that's causing the noise?

Over my way, £175 is expensive for an unknown quantity. If you can I'd get a rebuilt axle and then you won't need to worry about how long it will last.

It all seems to be coming from the rear drivers side. And also, looking from a distance, the right wheel at the top seems to point inwards a bit.

Any suggestions?

There might be no play in the arm, but I'm pretty sure on a 206 you will need to get the arm off to check the condition of the bearings. There is a how to thread on replacing the bearings which gives you an idea how the axles are put together.

You rear arms have slight camber as standard, however if one side has more than the other then it would suggest the bearings have failed, or are beginning to. Given the noises you are hearing I think it might be time to replace them.

It really does sounds like the dreaded rear axle failure. Only 3 things that I can think of would cause the misalignment:-

1) Hit a pot hole and bent something.
2) Collapsing trailing arm bearing.
3) Collapsing hub bearing. But for a hub bearing to be that bad it would be making a loud grumbling noise as it rotated and probably wouldn't produce a creaking noise.

Jack the car, put on axle sttands and push pull with hands at 12 / 6 o'clock then 9 / 3 o'clock and push, pull, twist and try to see whjere the play is. Is it in the arm bearing or the hub.

Failing that get a garage or experienced mate to check it.

got the same noise mate.. someone just commented on my post saying check the trailing arm bearing.... wouldnt get a new axle yet im putting my money on a bearing

The trouble is with these that by the time you have creaking and misalignment on the wheels the worn bearing, ingress of dirt and lack of grease means that the axle is almost certainly beyond repair. It ia also a bit of a faff getting everything apart and to then realise, probably having bought the bearings, that it isn't repairable is a damned nuisance.

Me, if I had misalignment and movement in the trailing arm I would be ordering a replacement axle.

To save axle failures you could plan the trailing arm bearing as a maintenance replacement item and add it to a 36 or 40k service which ever your car has.

Thanks to you all for your feedback Smile

Had it up on a ramp today with a respectable mechanic. The shocks move so much! It's so dangerous to drive at the moment. The mechanic couldnt believe it had only passed it MOT last week. He said I could try and change the shocks as a quick fix, but it wouldnt last long. So I'm going to go for a refurb axle I think!

I had -

"Nearside rear (both bushes) trailing arm has excessive play in a pin/bush" (2.4.G.2)

as an Mot fail. Then got it replaced. The whole arm gets replaced not just a bush/pin. Comes as a kit apparently.

Another MOT centre said they would not have failed it. An advisory on tne failed test was the same for the other side.

The front track rod end ball joints failed too. Car has done 10400miles. 2005 sw 1.4.
