My GTI is a 1999 model so I know it doesn't have the CAN-BUS but does it still have OBDII and if so what can I do with it? Is there any advantage for me to get hold of one of the (rather expensive) interfaces to connect it up to my laptop?

Question is what do you want to do with it?

You can do nearly everything essentially, it just means spending much more to get it all working.

£35 will get you a diagnostic read that will bring back live data (coolant temp, rpm, throttle position etc)...what more do you want to see?

If it does fault codes as well that's probably enough. What should I be looking out for when buying the reader? There seem to be a wide range of things on Ebay from about a tenner up to several hundred.

I bought an Autel Maxiscan MS509 which is fine. Rated highly by Car Mechanics Magazine.
