Hi all,

so I've had an annoying rattle/ping/squeak happening when I'm driving around and the noise seems to depend on the rotation of the wheels. I jacked the car up and rotated the wheels and the noise is still around. I then decided to remove the wheels to have a look at the brakes (which i doubt is the issue as I've just had the disc & pads replaced 3 months ago) and I basically found out the noise is coming from a cap and pin covering the wheel hub nut. I'm not a mechanic so I have no idea what this is really for... dust cap?

Whatever it is, its loose and its rattling rather easily causing a very similar noise to what has been bugging me.

I was removing it and fiddling about with it and I can only guess the noise is coming from the pin moving up and down causing the noise.

Would really appreciate any advice on what I can do about it to resolve the noise. Smile

that is the hub shaft nut / locking nut and pin i would have the wheel bearing checked also check the outer cv joint on the driveshaft does the noise get worse when you are moving and turning the steering as this is a sign of cv joint failing

The pin stops the hub nut from undoing itself! It shouldn't move much unless its tension has gone.

this is a safety pin to prevent the nut that holding the axle to get loose :),you can replace it.

Thanks for the replies guys. I really do appreciate it Smile

I've had the car inspected before and the cv and hubs checked out fine. The mechanic couldn't figure it out what it was so I thought I'd have a snoop around and found that pin and cover really loose. The actual hub nut sits behind the cover & pin.

So is this pin supposed to sit tightly? both the pins and metal cap that the pin goes over is loose.

They just stop the nut from undoing...they can be loose but they still wont come out.

Just take the cover/pin off and smear a bit of grease on both, then refit, they wont rattle around then and you can eliminate that from the list of possible causes.

I now highly believe the noise is coming from this. Just by punching the tyres with a bit of force you can hear this pin and cover rattle. I asked my peugeot mechanic and he did suggest using some silicon sealers as the can be easily removed if needed and able to resist being flung off. I'll give it a go when I have time. Thanks for the input guys. Much appreciated

Just thought of give an update for future reference in case if anybody searches this up.

Managed to find time last night and added some silicon adhesive seals around the pin and cover. Left it over night to dry and today I drove around and there weren't anymore squeak/pinging.

My only guess as to why this became so loose was cause I took my car to replace the lower arm before and the mechanic accidentally tore the cv boot. He offered to pull out the whole cv to clean it up and repack the boot so I guess he must've pried this open roughly which resulted in this being very loose.

Ah well. Problem solved. Thanks for the replies guys
