ok I am no expert mechanic but I know a fair bit . I have a standard gti 180 2004 that has a mind of its own and hase lots of play in the steering wheel where as when I got the car 4months ago it felt tight . so I have changed the tie rod ends replaced the drop links and both arms have had two new tyres on the back and two part worns on the front , there is no play in any of the bearings that I can see , on the odd occasion esp/asr not function pops up . im goin on holiday in two weeks so looking for the cheapest and best way to diagnose this problem any help would be appreciated thanks

There is no cheap way to fix it. Either take it somewhere can can pin point the problem or keep replacing parts until you've fixed it.

Could be the part worns. You never really know the history of part worn tyres.

as above i do not trust part worns or secondhand tyres i supose you could try swapping the rear wheels with the fronts and see if that makes any diffrence.

I have a feeling that its the driveshaft , I have a 138 gti sat in the garage for spares would the drive shafts be the same , I know there is a difference in the gearbox so not to sure if they fit . good point with part worns although one of the tyres was already on the rear of my car , I did notice that the casing around the abs sensor is cracked I cant see this being a problem ?? thanks for your input

Check tyre pressures.

Has tracking been set after replacing parts?

Worn rear stub axle allowing rear wheels to wander and steer the car from the rear.

Front bottom swivel joint(s).

Front wishbone(s).

+1 Lectorious. You are obviously in above your head. Get someone more knowleageable to have a look.

I would never use part worns but did this start at there same time that they were fitted or soon after. Is the tread starting to lift from the carcass or any other bulges or unusual tyre deformation.
