about a month ago the alternator belt failed on my gti on looking at it the outside 2 ribs where torn.now i don't know if this was the cause of the fail as I drove the car about 5 miles to get home so it could have been caught in the pullys, there was no other damage to the belt.now last night the belt again came off this time the belt had a split about 4 inchs long in the middle.
the pullys look in good condition and spin easyso any one any ideas or have I just been unlucky?
cheers

My dads previous facelift 406 with EW10J4 (206 GTI engine) did the same. After the third belt, I changed the tightener pulley and got the problem sorted. The pulley bearing was in good shape but the tightening mechanism has some sideways play in it and caused the belt to tear itself apart.

The belt tensioner comes with new belt roller and the whole bracket for it, neatly locked so you can just install it and the new belt and then release the mechanism by removing a pin and is self-adjusts.. Though it can be a little expensive, it was around 70 euros (a little less than £60) around here.
I'm pretty sure that the tensioner is your problem also, seen (and heard) lots of these fail around here on EW10 engines.
On a 406 it was quite easy to change it, didn't bother taking the car inside, did the job on the yard. Not sure about 206, haven't changed one yet. If it is anything like a GTI180 it is in quite a narrow space.
