Hi, Im hoping that someone will be able to offer some advise.
I have a Peugeot 206 LX 1.1 2000, Just had MOT and service.
I have noticed that when on the motorway and doing 50mph + the engine is starting to get very noisy. When doing 70 the engine is extremely noisy to the point that it would give you a headache. Engine temperature is greatly increased from what is used to be at 70, around 110 mark.
60mph is bearable and the car seems happier at this speed but still much noisier.
Any ideas as to what the issue could and is there a easy way to explain this to the garage?
Thanks in advance.

Did the noise start after the service? I'd double check all levels if so. Wouldn't be surprised if too much engine oil had been put in.

The noise as if the car is reving too much. ie. stayed in 2nd gear while doing 35mph.

Is the car actually revving more than it should? Or does it just sound that way.

You'd be better off putting a video up of the noise.
There is only you that knows if the car is revving higher than it was before, but the loud part could be anyones guess.
Have you checked the exhaust?
Is the car lacking power?
What kind of service was done? ie oil/filter/plugs or major service including coolant/timing belt/brake fluid. Each item should be itemised on your bill.
What brand of parts were used on the service?
Is the noise there when the car is stationary and you take it to 3000 rpm or only when moving?
Is the car vibrating when driving? If yes, can you feel it through your feet, a**e or hands?
Did the car pass the MOT with no work need? Any advisories?
Identifying/describing a noise on a car is one of the hardest things to do. There is nothing worse than getting a jobcard where someone has reported the noise and the reception staff have just put the minimal information the customer has given them. What's normal to one person isn't to another. It might be that noise is just a placebo. Whenever I do anything on the car I always hear a different noise than I am used too.

Have just taken the car for a drive so that i can give you as much information as possible. Thanks for all your help so far.
At 50mph you can start to hear the noise, like a loud purr. At 60mph it gets louder but bearable. At 70mph its really loud and really gets in your head. Sounds like the engine is working really hard to get up to speed.
Engine temperature is something else i noticed. at 50mph its around 90 at 60mph it increases to 100 and at 70 increases to 110 nearing to the red but doesn't go into the red, just the last section before the red.

Front section and back box of the exhaust have recently been changed.

Service was done last week at the same time as the MOT as it failed on emissions. Not sure what was done as just states service on receipt.

Noise is only there and noticeable at speeds of 50pmh+. When doing 70 its really loud and becomes unbearable to listen too.

Nope no notable vibrations

Car failed MOT on parking brake, drop link and wishbone and Emissions test. No advisories.

Does it happen through the same rev range in a different gear or only 5th? If no maybe a wheel bearing, warped disc, suspension components?? Damaged 5th gear?? If yes I'd be looking more at the engine and clutch. As has been said already noises can be extremely hard to diagnose even more so over Web forums. To be honest at this stage it could be pretty much anything. Not much help I know but maybe try taking it to a local garage.

Seeing that you are saying the noise starts at 50mph and the engine is getting hot, that would suggest to me that the noise could be coming from the radiator fan, nackered bearing, (partly seized) and the fans not spinning like it should do.

Noises are really hard to diagnose by description especially when you aren't particularly knowledgeable yourself. Get a knowledgeable mate to test drive it or take it back to the garage that did the service and ask them to test drive. As it happened after the service the test drive should be free.
