Hi all,

Time to change a headlight bulb and because I've never had to do this before I was wondering if there were any simple instructions on how to do this?

The practical information in the owners handbook is quite vague.

Are there any recommended H7 bulb brands specifically suited for the GTi 180?

Does anyone know what the original bulb brand/type are?

Big thanks in advance.

Cheers

It's bit of a mission, just in the middle of doing mine as we speak
1 remove the centre garnish with the pug emblem on it, four plastic top push in clip that are grey black, be careful with these, then from the far sides of the garnish just under the headlight on the outside of the car ( this is the painted part) prise either side out, held in by two push in clips either side, that gives you access to the bottom headlight bolt once you remove the garnish completely.
2 remove all 3 bolts per headlight, one is on the rad support, it's the easy one to see, then the one under the headlight which the garnish reveals, then the third is the one inside the front fender, a ratchet extension will give you access to thts one.

From here you can remove the headlight assembly with abit of jostling, watch out for the third bolt bracket I mentioned as it has a tendency to try and scratch the outter paint work on the fender, from there unclip the back panel where the bulb goes in, replace bulb, and do it all in reverse.

Have fun, cheers Matt Smile

Errrm you do not need to remove the headlight to replace the bulb. Its a little bit of a squeeze but not exactly hard to do.
Stand at the front of the car, looking at the left side first, the washer fluid fill neck is removable, look down and there is a little clip to release it, just unclip and wiggle it off carefully.
You will now have a bit more room, on each side there is a flap which unhooks, simply lift the tab at the top and tilt towards the back of the car whilst lifting up, it will then release and you can wiggle that out too. This will give you enough room to access all bulbs (side, dip, main, indicator) but as i said it is a little bit tight. Still fairly easy i would say though, takes me around 10 minutes to replace dip and main on both sides.
In regards to bulbs many people favour osram nightbreaker plus or similar. Hope this helps.

Is there 2 bulbs I need to change on each headlight? - main & dip?

Would I need to change both left and right low beam H7's?

Only the left hand side bulb is no longer working.

I'm thinking if I upgrade the low beam H7 would it look off or a different colour that the parker lights (W5W) are not changed?

When I changed my sidelights to LED's, I changed the main and dipped to MTEC Super Whites, so they matched the colour.

Personally I would go for Mtec bulbs. I had the Osram Nightbreaker+ and when one blew swapped both to Mtec. The light output is much brighter and it seems a crisper white light.
Obviously your choice could be limited to what's available in Australia
