but what a pig to fit.
I had to resort to asking for help from a mechanic friend of mine... he said I stood no chance of replacing it myself because he even struggled

If a mechanic said that to me, I wouldn't want to go to them again, aha. You had the whole clutch changed? I thought you were only doing the cable?

Yeah sorry....it was just the cable....I missed out a word. The mechanic is a family friend who we do trust but the old cable seemed to be stuck solid and it wasnt exactly easy to twist and turn to break whatever seal seemed to be holding it on. Its done now so all is good....just a new switch to sort the reversing lights and then test the solenoid for the boot lock and then the car is done.

Yeah it is easier. I can put my foot down now without worrying if the cambelt or clutch is gonna fail. And with the new brake pads I also know its gonna stop too. Lol!,

My car is the same. Always manages to stop that miniscule of a second away from a big insurance claim, haha!

I wonder what make your aftermarket cable was? just been out since 7am stripping the old cable out of my car and started to fit the new one at the bulk head when the clip holding the self adjuster decided it wanted to split like a piece of cheese!! furious right now... the self adjuster on the aftermarket part seems massive compared to the original... it makes things very tight to fit!

genuine cables are costly but so much easier to fit. I haven't seen an after market one yet that is anything like as easy as the genuine one. The thing that make the genuine one easy is the steel extension that protrudes through the bulkhead - it guides the inner so much more closely to where it fits on the pedal. Then you just need long thin piano player fingers for the final location.
