I'm no mechanic, but before i attempt and do this could someone possibly confirm this for me.
My OHs car (206, 1.1 8v) just suddenly stopped as she was pulling onto the drive. When you try and start the car, it makes the sound a car makes when the engine is already turned on and you try and turn it over. I think, it's a solenoid sound in the starter motor? Like a high pitched screech.
I tried hitting it with a hammer - didn't work.
The car is old, not worth anything and the repair bill wouldn't be justified. It's not long had it's MOT and the TAX is due soon. A scrap yard will collect it and give me £50, but i think a running car would be better than £50.
I had a dry run, and got the starter motor off - to make sure i could and could fit a new one.
Does it sound like a starter motor problem? Or could it something more sinister - or even a faulty battery?

Try testing the battery see what it's holding.

Doesn't sound like the starter as the car was already running when it died. I would get your battery and alternator checked first of all.

I was told to check the cam belt as well, it is still there and tight.
I don't have a volt meter to check the battery. Her battery has now ran flat anyway and the engine makes no noise at all when i turn the ignition over. The interior stuff comes on but that's it.
I had a look at switching the battery from my 206 to hers to see if that would work - but i actually couldn't see how my battery came out. It has a foam covering and i can't see any clamp holding it down. My car also has a multiplexed system and i would probably mess it up.
So close to ringing a scrap yard to come collect it!

If a few days with no use have passed and the battery is flat then it would point to a problem with the battery charging, or the battery itself.
You shouldn't be able to check the cambelt without removing the cover. Are you sure it isn't the aux belt you have checked?
As for your battery, it's just a foam covering - unclip the studs and you should see how the battery comes out. There should be a retaining bracket over the top, normally two 10mm bolts hold it to the battery box. Disconnect the battery, remove the retaining bracket bolts and lift the bracket out the way. The battery should then lift straight out. If there is no retaining bracket then you simply need to disconnect the battery and lift it straight out. Follow the guide on here to shut down your BSI system before removing the battery.
Scrapping a car without even getting the basics checked first is ridiculous tbh. It will cost more than you get in scrap for a new car, which might have it's own problems. Take the battery out the car in question and take it to a garage and see if they will check it for you.

I checked the cam belt by removing the 2 m10 bolts and flicking the black cover off - it's intact and tight.
The battery on my 206 has a foam covering - but no bracket. It has a bar up the side where I'm assuming the bracket would of been originally been, but i gave it a wiggle and the battery seemed solid with no other brackets apparent.
I'll pop her battery up the garage this afternoon and see what they say.
