Does anyone know if it's a simple swap to switch manual a/c control panel for the digital control panel. I've read contrasting reports some say its a nightmare and the entire system needs to be changed others say that just the panel needs swapping.

Whole system needs changing. There's a lot more sensors to detect the inside temperature and things.

A lot of people with the digital climate control moan about the system as they don't understand how it actually works. 
As for a retro fit, it can be done BUT it's NOT an easy job, not really worth it these day's unless you have a complete kit of parts & feeling bored.

Cheers guys I've seen a kit on eBay with the controls n the pump and it's pretty cheap, wanted to upgrade, the manual controls look dated I think

If its pre you just need the heater box wiring, heater box and control panel

I done it to one of my 206's was a pre plex and fairly easy job.
I have a climate control heater box and wiring free to a good home if collected, will fit a preplex. Just needs a control panel (one I had got broke)
