Hiya Guys been searching the net for an answer to this for a while.


My Speedometer has completely packed in now, was dropping speeds and now its not working at all. My instrument cluster is the one plug type.

From what i have gathered from reading around, if i was to just change the cluster with another it would take which ever millage is higher.

Here are my questions

Would changing the instrument cluster cause any more problems for my car?

And am i able to change it with any "one plug" cluster or would i need to make sure the model is the same?

If i cannot just change the cluster, how could i go about getting this fixed?

My Mots at the end of the month and now im starting to worry about what to do.

Any help at all will be appreciated greatly.

Very rare for a multiplexed instrument cluster to fail like this.

Is the mileage reading still counting up correctly?

Year of 206 & does it have ABS fitted?

Some use a speed sensor on the gearbox for the speedo while other's take the speed info from the ABS system.

the mileage is still reading correctly, everything else is still working correctly on the cluster.


2002 Peugeot 206 2.0l Hdi. (not sure about abs how can i find out)

I have done the test where someone said if the interior was flashing it is not the sensor. (the light was flashing)

Abs pump is front right of the engine bay, looking from the front to the back. If there's a (small) football size gap behind the passenger headlight you don't have it.
You might get sn ABS light on the dash on initial start up too? Not sure on that though.

changing the cluster will not do anything to your mileage, just make sure you get a set out of diesel model that match, your mileage is stored on your ecu.
I've just swapped mine with a set from the scrappy and I've not had any problems.
if you,ve got abs on your 's there will be an orange light that is above your fuel gauge that goes out after 5 seconds when you turn your ignition on
Abs was made mandatory on all new cars built after the 1 july 2004 so if yours has abs is was an option.

thanks for the reply! Im sure i read that on the one plug model if the milleage is higher it will take that though, but ill take you word for it ! i hope it fixes my issue Smile

On the multi-plexed the mileage is stored on the BSI and the clocks. If you put a cluster in with a higher mileage then this reading will be recorded on the car and that is what will be displayed. Put a lower mileage cluster in and it will update to the reading on the BSI. This is to avoid clocking.

Non-Multiplex like mine store the mileage on the instrument cluster. I think your is the same. Not sure about higher or lower as mentioned by Macca. Any cluster with one plug will work, you can still get a cheap one from eBay. There are also several companies who offer a repair starting from 50GBP. I think BBA Reman can do this.

I got mine from eBay which use two plugs, it was new Peugeot OEM with white background. Price was 200GBP + shipping to Egypt. There are lots of deals on eBay. Just type instrument cluster one plug Peugeot 206 in the search!

Anyway the one plug instrument is much easier to get rather than the two plugs model. It takes a while for me to find a good two plugs cluster.

Yes sure Macca, all cars from 2001 are multiplexed. I meant the same about the mileage stored on the cluster.

Multiplexed 206 store the mileage in BOTH the instrument cluster & the BSI unit.

Change EITHER of those parts for one that has a HIGHER mileage & it will overwrite the lower mileage on the part you haven't replaced.

If a replacement instrument cluster is needed to repair this 206 then get one with a LOWER mileage reading then is currently showing on the car & everything will be fine Wink

That's probably why mine kept the original mileage when swapped mine last week,
couldn't check before I swapped them, good to know tho.
