This is a bit of a weird one but im hoping someone might know the answer or what the issue is.

The car is an X reg 2000 206 GTI (preplexed)

When i am driving at night the speedo and other dials are illuminated. When i come to a junction or roundabout to indicate, i click the indicator stalk and i notice that the dash lights dim temporarily. From what i can tell it causes no dimming of the headlights or sidelights, it is just the instrument display that dims. sometimes it can seem to dim for a short while. say 0.5 to 1 seconds.

Any help really appreciated.

Is it dimming in time with the indicator flashing?

Do they dim when you turn the heater fan or rear demister on?

No, it will dim briefly as I touch the indicator stalk to turn the indicator on, then its fine even when the indicator is flashing.

I do not see any dimming when I put the rear demister or heater fan on.

I was wondering if the light stalk might have a loose connection somewhere, but its really weird as it doesn't affect the headlights at all.

Speculation, but it could be wear in the stalk causing something 'make before break' rather than 'break before make' - Ie as the stalk moves some element is connected to two points while it should be to only one or none (the one it was at and where it's going, instead of first breaking away from the one it was at before making contact with the one it's going to...
Once fully in the new position it would again be OK, only connected to one point.

Does it happen on both activation and deactivation of the indicator? Both to the left and the right?

It only seems to happen on activation.

Ok, think I have it sussed and whenever the indicator is turned on, just as it is clicked on the dials intermittently dim. The Heater controls also dim and when I looked at the cars reflection, I noticed the sidelights also go off and come back on.

I therefore think its the lighting stalk and this is the part I need to replace.
