I got a call from SWMBO today, panicking that her 206 kept on cutting out.
I took it for a brief run out (it was brief ) and found the following symptoms....
It started well, ticked over without any problems. Nice and smooth with no hesitation.
I reversed off our drive (no stall and behaved well) and set off up the road.
After 200 meters it stopped. No warning. No warning lights. The engine simply died and the clocks dropped to their default position.
The car started immediately with no hesitation and off I went again.
A short distance later it died inexactly the same manner and restarted immediately.
I set off again and again it stopped. This time it told me it had an immobiliser fault. The car cranked but did not fire up. I gave it a few more turns and then it started instantly and I drove home where it happily restarted on our drive.
Its a 2001 206 2.0 HDi
Does any body have any ideas? It cant be the first issue such as this

The ignition sensor ring could be giving up.
As all things now, best to stick it on the diagnostics.

I have done the Pug reset thing and it still continues to cut out.
However, I have noticed that the more it drove a short distance the more often it flagged up the "immobiliser fault". So as I keep starting it the more it drains the battery and the more it flags "immobiliser fault". There is a link I think.
Just charged the battery from flat. My maintenance charger went from flat to fully charged in 1.75hrs
With the battery not on the car 18.5
With the car idling 20v
I think the car has a battery/charging fault causing it to throw a very strange French fault.
Then I may be wrong......

You need to sort out the charging system fault then replace the ruined battery
DON'T run the car any more, you risk damaging the BSI unit!
Alternator on the shopping list by the description of the fault.

20v at idle? There is definitely a fault.
It should be around 12.75v at rest and 14v at idle.
Has the regulator gone in your alternator and it's frying the battery?

Would this cause the engine cutting out problem though?

If you fixed the alternator charging fault,your problem will be fixed as well,as too much voltage or too low voltage is the same,always cause problems

I have cured the thing.
Don't forget, it started well
All systems worked
It ran well
It simply, randomly, stopped
It turns out I was right regarding the battery
New battery fitted and it sits at 12.7v and
charges at 14.2v
Starts and doesn't randomly stop

You now have perfect charging voltages and a car that works perfectly as well.
An old points and coil car would have run a treat with the voltages that you were getting.
Aren't modern cars funny things!

Got a call at 07:45 this morning from SWMBO.
Its stopped. So after battling through traffic for an hour I get to it and find the original problem.
So it ran faultlessly for two days then decided to stop randomly. This is the latest in a long list of both mechanical and electrical faults which are really unacceptable.
I will be booking it in for a diagnostic. I will repair the fault and as she has lost faith in it I will put it up for sale.
This is our first Peugeot experience and unless I can get a very, very good deal I am afraid it will be our last.

Why do people always sell the car after it's gone wrong and they've fixed it. If you've fixed it then it will work and you don't need to buy another car that will have a new problem
Get it connected to Peugeot planet and you'll see what's wrong with it straight away. If it cuts out under load it could be the high pressure fuel system with dirt in the regulator.
If it cuts out randomly it could be a wiring fault or an immobiliser fault.
