Well Bosch the company who actually make the plug don't recommend them.

I can't find a Bosch FR78NX. Are you sure that really is the marking on your plug?

If you get the correct detail I can give you the difference between the plug you have fitted and the FQR7ME and possibility / probability of that being the cause.

F = 16mm AF plug spanner 14mm x 1.25mm pitch thread
Q = Quick heat.
R = Interference suppression.
7 = Heat range.
M = 26.5mm thread length with 3mm central electrode projection.
E = Nickel Yttrium electrode.
This plug has 0.9mm pre-set plug gap.

That number is for a Bosch Super 4 plug & it does exist

Bosch 10 digit ID number = 0242232815

Mmmm the information on the Bosch web sites doesn't seem to cope with the "78" description. I can only assume this is either an extended heat range covering both 7 and 8 or is used to show it is midway between a 7 and 8.

So I can't give specific on heat range but either assumption will give a very small change in operating temperature and unlikely to give the effect you have suffered. Also, with so many people here recommending the FR78NX, it is unlikely to be the cause. The rest of the detail for your plug is:-

F = 16mm AF plug spanner 14mm x 1.25mm pitch thread
R = Interference suppression.
78 = Heat range?
N = 26.5mm thread length with 4mm central electrode projection.
X = 1.1mm pre-set plug gap.

You will note that the electrode projects 1mm further than the FQR7ME. This extra projection is usually done for two reasons and they are that the electrode is in a slightly hotter area of the cylinder and the hotter burn there helps stop plug fouling but it gets more of the intake air over it so that helps cool it.

As above with lots of people recommending these I would be surprised if it was the cause. If it was me though I would fit the recommended Iridium replacement for the FQR7ME rather than the super 4.

None of this really helps you find root cause.

Possible causes of burnt valves:-
Spark plug incorrect heat range.
Defective CAT.
Low octane fuel causing pre-ignition.
Running rich and carbon build up on valve seat.
Running lean causing excess combustion temperature.
Blocked water cooling system or passage ways.
General engine over heating.
Incorrect valve clearance preventing the valve fully closing when hot.
LPG conversion.
Poorly carried out cylinder head repair work after broken cam belt.
Exhaust or exhaust manifold damage or leak.

Rich or lean running ought to have thrown a fault code before it caused a burnt valve.

I'd rather take the advice directly from Bosch automotive technical services & NOT the book in Halfords or sources elsewhere.

FQR7ME is the ONLY plug Bosch list suitable that they produce for fitment to the GTI 180 engine.

Actually, as per my post, if I was looking for a performance replacement I would fit the Bosch recommended Iridium alternative. Much better than a Super 4.

Also note that FR78NX has a wider gap (more than 20% wider) so will stress your coil pack. Another reason to use the Iridium rather than Super 4.
