03 plate GTi 138, I think my thrust bearing is on the point of shitting itself big style. Started making some extremely horrible noises last night. New clutch kit time.

Just wondered if anybody had any recommendations on a decent clutch kit for it?

Also is there anything else I should be replacing whilst I have the box off apart from the driveshaft seals?

Regarding the flywheel I know it would probably be best to whip it off and give it a skim. But I do have a 180 flywheel sat in the garage, would it be worth me getting that cleaned up & skimmed and throw that in with it instead? Or should I just stick with the standard 138 flywheel?

Thanks for any input Smile

Been looking at the Valeo kits. Seen a Valeo kit for £78 delivered.

Valeo was most likely what it rolled out the factory with originally Wink

Cant really go wrong with any of those 3 brands, there all decent quality.

It's still on the original clutch at 98K, the thrust bearings been making a noise since I bought the car, I knew it was a job coming before I even took ownership. Just a shame as the clutch itself isn't slipping. But I'd rather get the job done & out of the way in my own time so I can avoid the hassle of it leaving me stranded on the side of a road miles & miles away from home.

Any advice on the flywheel?

Flywheel - I've never had to change one, normally they clean up ok with a bit of brake cleaner.

Not sure if your BE box is similar to the MA but I do remember also changing the input shaft bearing, bolts on to the outside of gearbox.

Might just give that a go then, will have to find the numbers for the flywheels and see if the 180's significantly lgihter to warrant changing it.

And regarding the bearing, would that be number 2 here....

Always worth changing when doing the clutch kit, they do wear a fair bit & get damaged over time.

Okie dokie, thanks Smile

Need to do the timing belt as well, Thinking it might make life easier if I pull the box off then do the belt as I'll be able to move the engine further over for more access.

You need to fully strip the box to access the input shaft bearing. BEs have no issue with the bearing though mate

Just dont loose the washer behind the nose cone!! Ive bloody done it and killed my paddle clutch! They are £46 plus vat as well

Cheers, will make sure I keep my eye on that one then. You got any input on what I do with the flywheel? Do I just clean up the 138 one or do I throw the 180 one in?
